Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts illustrate the proportion of time of grown-ups, spending their day on different daily avtivites, namely going out, playing sports, working, relaxing at home, sleeping and travelling to work in the years 1958 and 2008.
Overall, it is clear that working consumes the most time of the day in both the years. Playing sport is the only activity that did not change dramatically. Sleeping and going out with friends/family has decreased over the time.
Looking at the details in more depth, working and sleeping takes away large chunk of time of a day. In the year 1958, working and sleeping consumed 65 percent of the day. Similarly, in the year 2008, they consumed 67 percent of the day. Relaxing at home is another activity, that grew up over the time from 8 to 13 percent of day.
Turning to the remaining categories, the share of time in a day consumed by travelling to work has quadrapled over the years. In contrast, going out with family/friends had decreased by trifold. Finally, playing sports increased by margin of one percent in 1958 to 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. The overview correctly identifies that working consumed the most time in both years. Key data points are accurately cited, such as working and sleeping figures, and general trends are highlighted, such as the increase in relaxing at home and working. However, there are some minor factual inaccuracies in the data reporting; for example, the student states that playing sports increased by a margin of one percent, but the charts show it rose from zero (not present in 1958) to 7% in 2008. Similarly, the claim that going out with family/friends decreased by trifold is inaccurate based on the figures provided (19% down to 6%). Overall, the response covers the task well, but the data precision prevents it from reaching the highest band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paragraph, moves to a clear overview paragraph, and then breaks down the details into body paragraphs ('Looking at the details in more depth' and 'Turning to the remaining categories'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In the year 1958', 'Similarly', and 'In contrast' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and some transitions could be smoother. The progression from general features to specific categories is handled well, ensuring the reader can easily follow the comparison between the two years.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common phrases such as 'large chunk of time', 'quadrapled', and 'proportion of time'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations. For instance, 'grown-ups' is overly informal for an Academic task, 'avtivites' contains a spelling error, 'grew up' is used incorrectly to describe an increase in percentages (rather than 'increased' or 'grew'), and 'playing sports increased by margin of one percent' misinterprets the data. While communication is not impeded, these inaccuracies and limited control over less common lexical items place the response firmly in Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases ('In the year 1958, working and sleeping consumed...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text. Subject-verb agreement issues are present, such as 'working and sleeping takes away' (should be 'take') and 'Sleeping and going out... has decreased' (should be 'have'). Punctuation errors also occur, such as unnecessary commas separating subjects and verbs ('Relaxing at home is another activity, that grew up...'). Despite these errors, the sentences remain largely comprehensible, and communication is rarely impeded.
