Student answer (Band 5.0)

This is a comparsion chart of year 1958 and 2008, which shows how working man spends his entire day. In 1958, most of the working man spend major part of the day while working and sleeping. After sleeping, spending time with families and hanging out with friends is their priority while relaxing and travelling to work comes after that. It is noticed that trend has been changed in 2008 because the percentage of spending time on work is increased. People were seen giving more priority to sleeping and doing relaxation after working hours. In 2008 travelling time increased while spending spending time with friends and family decreases. In 1958 there is no trend of sports while in 2008 it is seen people take some time out for different kind of sports. Although the time is very less as compared to the remaining activities. From the overall graph it is clearly visible that there is major shift is in working habits of people which is more prioritized by people in year 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to describe the main features of the two pie charts comparing time spent by working adults in 1958 and 2008. While some key features are mentioned, such as the increase in working hours and the introduction of sports in 2008, the response lacks accurate data reporting. For instance, the exact percentages for categories like sleeping (32% to 25%) and working (33% to 42%) are omitted, relying instead on vague descriptions like 'major part' and 'more prioritized'. Furthermore, there are factual inaccuracies regarding trends, such as stating that travelling time increased while family time decreased universally, whereas specific numbers require careful parsing. The overview is somewhat vague and underdeveloped, placing this response firmly in Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an identifiable organization, starting with an introductory sentence and attempting to contrast the two years across the body of the text. However, the progression is hindered by a lack of clear paragraphing, as the entire text is lumped into a single block. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes repetitive or misused (e.g., 'After sleeping, spending time... comes after that', 'It is noticed that trend has been changed'). Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall flow feels mechanical. Because the arrangement lacks logical paragraphing and smooth transitions, it meets the criteria for Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate vocabulary for the task. Words such as 'comparsion' (spelling error), 'priority', 'trend', and 'habits' are used. There are noticeable lexical inaccuracies, such as 'working man' instead of 'working adults' or 'workers', and repetitive phrasing like 'spending time' and 'priority'. Spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'is very less' instead of 'is much lower' or 'significantly less', cause some strain for the reader. The lexical range is sufficient to convey basic points, aligning with Band 5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty. Examples of grammatical errors include 'most of the working man spend' (subject-verb agreement and pluralisation error), 'the time is very less as compared to' (awkward phrasing and preposition use), and 'there is major shift is in working habits' (double verb/copula error). Punctuation is basic, and frequent grammatical errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader, which is characteristic of Band 5.
