Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given pie charts illustrate how job doing grown-ups in a specific country devote their time in the years 1958 and 2008.
Both pie charts have much of their area allocated to work and sleeping, whereas in 1958 outings with family and friends were almost three times more than in 2008. Playing sports is the only activity that remained constant in both 1958 and 2008 at 7%.
In 1958, percentage for working and sleeping were the highest ones with 33% and 32% respectively. Remaining proportion of adults spent their day in other activities, showing outings with friends and family at 19%, relaxing at home at 8%, playing sports at 7% and the minimum of 2% for travelling to work.
In 2008, Working covers almost half of the chart at 42%, followed by sleeping at 25% and relaxing at home at 13%. Playing sports and travelling to work are both at 7% with outings with friends at last with 6%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both pie charts and making relevant comparisons, which places it at this level. You successfully identified key trends, such as the prominence of working and sleeping in both years, and correctly noted that playing sports remained constant at 7%. However, some parts of your response are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies; for instance, you stated that playing sports is the only activity that remained constant, but travelling to work also remained at 7% in 2008. Furthermore, your comparison regarding outings ('outings with family and friends were almost three times more than in 2008') lacks precision. To reach a higher band, ensure that all key data points are thoroughly checked and fully supported with accurate comparative language.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically. You introduced the charts in the first paragraph, provided an overview in the second, and then detailed the specific years in the third and fourth paragraphs. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the transition between sentences feels a bit disjointed, and referencing could be smoother ('Remaining proportion of adults spent their day...' lacks a clear article). Paragraphing is used, but the internal logical progression within paragraphs requires more flexible cohesive devices. To improve, work on connecting your sentences more naturally using a wider range of cohesive phrases rather than relying solely on basic transitional structures.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You have used an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive verbs and nouns such as 'illustrate', 'proportion', and 'respectively'. However, there are noticeable limitations and awkward word choices, such as 'job doing grown-ups' instead of 'working adults'. There are also minor lexical inaccuracies in phrasing, like 'outings with family and friends were almost three times more', where 'spent nearly three times as much time on' would be more precise. These errors do not impede communication, but to achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate greater control over less common vocabulary, collocation, and natural phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
Your response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating that you can use various structures to report data. You successfully employed dependent clauses and comparative structures. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('percentage for working and sleeping were the highest ones', where 'percentages' was required) and missing articles ('Remaining proportion' or 'outings with friends at last'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To move up to the next band, you should aim to increase your proportion of error-free complex sentences and pay closer attention to articles and pluralization.
