Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response addresses the task only minimally and fails to meet the word count requirement, falling significantly short of the 150-word minimum at only 89 words. While the writer attempts to present an overview and some data points from the charts, the content is incomplete. The response focuses almost exclusively on the 1958 data and the introductory overview, omitting the substantial 2008 data entirely, such as the increase in working time to 42% or the introduction of playing sports at 7%. Furthermore, the information selected is only partially reported, and the underdeveloped nature of the response prevents a full account of the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation in the response, with an initial attempt at an overview paragraph followed by a body paragraph detailing the 1958 data. However, there is no clear overall progression because the expected second body paragraph addressing the 2008 data is missing entirely. Cohesive devices are basic and repetitive, such as "whereas", "After that", and "However". Paragraphing is also disrupted, with the introduction and overview being separated awkwardly rather than forming a cohesive introductory section. Referencing and logical sequencing are limited by the abrupt ending of the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited in range and minimally adequate for the task. The writer demonstrates some control over basic vocabulary related to the charts, such as "working adults", "spending their time", and "respectively". However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling errors that affect precision, such as "Overviewing this charts" instead of 'Looking at these charts', the spelling mistake "thier", and the awkward word form "time speding" instead of 'time spent'. These inaccuracies reflect a limited resource that struggles to move beyond repetitive, basic expressions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic clauses. Attempts at slightly more complex constructions contain frequent errors, such as missing articles and prepositions (e.g., "spent thier time working, whereas less spent on travelling"). Verb form errors are also present, as seen in the phrase "people speding most of their time working at 33%" and "people used their valuable time sleeping... was at 32%". Punctuation is occasionally missing, as demonstrated by the run-on sentence and missing full stop at the end of the text. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
