Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task partially, attempting to present data from the two pie charts comparing how working adults spent their time in 1958 and 2008. While an overview is attempted in the second paragraph, it contains inaccuracies, such as stating that time used for sports was relatively similar for both years (sports data is entirely absent for 1958). Furthermore, several figures are misreported; for instance, the text claims adults used 33% of their time on going to work in 1958, whereas the chart shows working took 33% and travelling to work took 2%. Key features are presented mechanically with limited extension or support, and some data points are confused or under-developed, reflecting a partial and somewhat inaccurate understanding of the visual information provided.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates some organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding remark, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, though the layout and division of ideas are somewhat disjointed and feature fragmented sentences. Cohesive devices are used, but they tend to be repetitive or inaccurate, relying heavily on basic linkers like 'To begin with', 'Futhermore', and 'In conclusion'. Referencing between sentences is occasionally unclear, and mechanical punctuation errors disrupt the flow of information, making the logical progression between ideas difficult to follow at times.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic concepts related to the charts. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'drastically reduced' and 'consummed', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in spelling, word form, and word choice, such as 'goin going', 'freinds', and 'spents'. Inaccuracies in collocation and phrasing, such as 'quality time relaxing at home' and 'te least activities don', cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the lexical range from reaching a higher level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'much time were been spent', 'time used for sports... are'), incorrect prepositions (e.g., 'spent 33% of their on going to work'), and missing articles. Punctuation and spacing are also problematic, with multiple missing spaces after periods and commas. These frequent errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader.
