Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie charts compare how adults spent their time on various activities during a day in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, working accounted for the largest proportion of adult's time in both the years. However, the amount of time spent sleeping and socialising with friends or family declined considerably between 1958 and 2008.
In 1958, almost equal proportions of adult's time were spent working and sleeping, at 32 and 33%,respectively. Meanwhile, only 2% of their time was spent on travelling to work. Adults spent 19% of their time socialising with friends or family, while the remaining 8% was spent relaxing at home.
By 2008, the distribution of adult's time had shifted considerably. Although working remained the dominant activity, accounting for 42%, sleeping represented the second largest share, at 25%. While time spent on relaxing at home is at 13%, 7% was devoted to each of playing sports and travelling to work. The least amount of time is spent on socialising with friends or family, at just 6%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and highlighting the main features of the two pie charts. The introduction and body paragraphs report accurate data from 1958 and 2008, such as working accounting for 33% and 42% respectively, and correctly identify major trends like the decline in time spent sleeping and socialising. Ideas are well extended and supported with relevant figures. To move into higher bands, the response could integrate a more sophisticated, overarching synthesis rather than listing individual data points, ensuring that comparisons between the two years are woven even more tightly into the narrative.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The report demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is divided sensibly, beginning with a broad introduction, followed by an overview statement, and then breaking down the specific years into dedicated paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', 'By 2008', and 'Although' are used effectively to guide the reader through the comparisons. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and body details. To achieve a higher level, cohesive devices could be deployed with even greater flexibility, avoiding slightly formulaic transition markers and ensuring seamless referencing between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common functional items and reporting verbs such as 'accounted for', 'proportion', 'distribution', and 'devoted'. Word choices are generally appropriate for an academic report, though there are minor inaccuracies in collocation and preposition usage, such as writing 'time spent on travelling to work' instead of 'time spent travelling to work'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate and do not impede communication. To reach the next band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated synonyms and collocation patterns to describe proportions and trends with greater precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response employs a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over structures like subordinate clauses and participial phrases, as seen in 'Although working remained the dominant activity, accounting for 42%'. There are some errors in punctuation and articles, such as the missing space after the comma in 'at 32 and 33%,respectively' and the incorrect use of the present tense 'is at' instead of 'was at' when discussing past data in the final paragraph. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to maintain error-free complex structures consistently throughout the entire response.
