Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts illustrate the proportion of how working adults of a specific country spent their time in 1958 and 2008.Units are measured in percentage.
Overall, it is evident that most adults spent their time at working in both years.Besides working ,there were other activites such as sleeping, relaxing at home, travelling to work, going out with friends/family and playing sports that people used to do in their daily life.
In terms of most prominent activities, working dominated both years rising from 32% to 42% ,followed by sleeping.Even though sleeping held a considerable amount of time in both years, it actually dropped from 32% in 1958 to 25% in 2008.By contrast, the allocated time to relax at home increased by 5% over the period.
Regarding other activities, daily time for going out with friends/family reduced to one third , declining from 19% to just 6%.However,a completely opposite trend was seen as the time for travelling to work increased more than three times since it rose from 2% to 7%.Lastly , an almost steady situation for the time for sports as it did not rose more than 1% from 1958 to 2008

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the two pie charts. An overview is present, highlighting that working was the dominant activity in both years, and key comparisons are made, such as the shift in sleeping and relaxing times. However, some ideas are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies; for instance, the writer states that working rose from 32% (instead of the correct 33% shown in the data) to 42%, and the mention of sports in the final paragraph is slightly imprecise regarding the data values. Despite these minor lapses, the main trends are covered relevantly, which places the response securely at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific categories. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In terms of', 'Even though', and 'By contrast'. However, referencing and progression are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, as seen in the rather abrupt transitions between sentences in the final paragraph. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, but moving towards a higher band would require smoother logical transitions and more sophisticated referencing throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the general trends and comparisons with terms like 'proportion', 'prominent activities', 'dominated', and 'allocated time'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'considerable amount' and 'opposite trend', though there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'spent their time at working' and 'did not rose'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the information easily, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher level of lexical precision and natural control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinate clauses like 'Even though sleeping held a considerable amount of time' and 'as the time for travelling to work increased'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues present, such as missing spaces after commas and periods, incorrect verb forms like 'did not rose', and preposition errors like 'spent their time at working'. While these errors occur fairly regularly, they rarely impede communication. The variety of structures demonstrates a reasonable attempt at complex grammar, but persistent mistakes in tense consistency and basic patterns keep the grammar score at this level.
