Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie charts illustrate how working adults spent their time on distrinct activities in 1958 and 2008 in a particular country.

Overall, a substantial amount of time is spent on work in both the years whereas a drastic change in time being spent on going out with friends and family is observed.

In 1958, the least amount of time was spent on travelling to work at around 2%. While people spent almost the same proportion of time on playing sports being 6% and 7% respectively in both the years, there was a considerable decrease in time spent on sleeping, which was reduced from 32% to 25%. A significant change was observed in time being spent on 'going out with friends/family', whose proportion got reduced to 6% in 2008 from 19% in 1958.

Adults have increased the proportion of their time spent on relaxing at home when compared to what they had previously spent in 1958. The time reduced in 'going out with friends/family' is now being devoted to activities like working whose proportion had surged from 33% to 42% taking the highest amount of time of an adult.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. The overview correctly highlights the dominant role of work and the drastic shift in socialising time. Key data points are accurately cited, such as the rise in working hours from 33% to 42% and the drop in time spent with friends and family from 19% to 6%. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the detail regarding playing sports maintaining a similar proportion (6% and 7%) is grouped somewhat awkwardly alongside other points rather than fully integrated into a clear comparative narrative. To reach a higher level, all selected features require fully extended support and seamless integration into the comparative overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion/overview structure. Information and ideas are generally logically sequenced, allowing the reader to follow the progression from general trends to specific data. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or abrupt, particularly in how sentences within the body paragraphs are linked. Referencing is mostly clear, but transitional phrases could be varied and used more flexibly to enhance the flow between contrasting data points. Paragraphing is used appropriately, yet the internal logical progression of the body section could be polished to achieve a more natural and cohesive textual journey.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

An adequate range of vocabulary is demonstrated for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'substantial amount', 'drastic change', 'proportion', and 'surged'. Word choice is generally appropriate and communicates the intended meaning effectively, despite a minor spelling slip ('distrinct' instead of 'distinct'). Some collocations and lexical phrases are handled well, though occasional slight awkwardness in phrasing prevents the vocabulary score from rising further. To achieve a higher standard, the writer should aim for a wider, more flexible range of precise lexical items with consistent control over less common vocabulary and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as relative clauses ('whose proportion got reduced') and comparative constructions. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as the tense inconsistency and prepositional phrasing in 'in both the years whereas a drastic change in time being spent', but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of simple sentences remain accurate. The writer successfully employs a variety of clause structures, showing glimpses of higher-level grammatical control. To reach the next tier, the response would need a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and finer control over verb forms and prepositions.
