Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie charts compare the routine of working adults in a specific country in the year 1958 ad 2008.Overall it can be observed that time spent in working hours of the personnel increased sharply while the sleeping time and other activities level such as travelling, hangout with family and friends depicts a drastic decrease.

In 1958, corporate used to spend a high proportion of their daily routine in working and sleeping but it reflects a upward and downward trend as working increased from 33% to 42% while sleeping decreased from 32% to 25%.The similar trend can be observed by working persons for going out with friends and families following a decline from 19% to 6% approximately. On the contrary, travelling to work and relaxing at home show an contradiction in spending time by rising slightly from 2 to 7% and 8% to 13% approximately, respectively.Lastly sports accounted for a constant trend for time spending by the working adult thoroughly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by comparing the pie charts for 1958 and 2008, providing an overview and selecting main features such as working and sleeping hours. However, some aspects of the task are addressed more fully than others, and certain ideas remain under-developed or imprecise. For instance, the mention that sports accounted for a 'constant trend' is factually inaccurate, as sports were not present in the 1958 chart at all (accounting for 0% initially before rising to 7% in 2008). Furthermore, terminology is occasionally misused, such as referring to working adults as 'corporate' or 'personnel'. To reach a higher band, the response would need to ensure all reported data points are fully accurate against the source and provide a more thorough, error-free extension of the key trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the writing into an introductory paragraph containing an overview, followed by a body paragraph detailing specific data points. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. There are typographical and spacing errors in the text, such as '1958 ad 2008' and missing spaces after commas (e.g., '1958,corporate'). Cohesive devices and referencing are occasionally awkward, such as 'The similar trend can be observed by working persons for going out with friends and families following a decline', which muddies the logical flow. Paragraphing is also somewhat compressed into a single bulky body paragraph rather than being logically distributed. To improve, the writer should ensure smooth logical transitions, clearer referencing between sentences, and correct punctuation and spacing around cohesive markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic comparisons such as 'increased sharply' and 'drastic decrease'. However, the range is limited and there are notable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form. For example, using 'corporate' as a noun to mean employees or workers is incorrect, and 'hangout' is an informal verb form used incorrectly as a noun phrase in 'travelling, hangout with family'. There are also spelling and word-formation slips, such as 'an upward and downward trend' where 'upward' is paired inappropriately with a downward trend description, and 'show an contradiction' instead of 'show a contradiction'. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider and more precise range of vocabulary with accurate collocations and formal register suited for an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'while the sleeping time and other activities level... depicts a drastic decrease'. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Prepositional and article errors are present, such as 'time spent in working hours' instead of 'on working hours', and missing articles like 'in specific country'. Subject-verb agreement issues also occur, as seen in 'activities level... depicts' (plural subject with singular verb). Punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after full stops and commas, detract from control. Although these errors rarely impede overall communication, they prevent the writing from achieving a higher level of grammatical accuracy. Incorporating more error-free complex sentences and polishing basic grammatical patterns will elevate this criterion.
