Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across both years. The overview correctly identifies overall trends, such as the increase in working time and the decrease in sleeping and socialising. However, some minor inaccuracies appear in the overview and body paragraphs, such as misclassifying 'travelling to work' as increasing when it remained at 7% in 2008 (or misinterpreting its overall trajectory from 1958's 2%), and stating that playing sports remained unchanged when it was only recorded in 2008 at 7%. Furthermore, ideas are sometimes slightly underdeveloped or unclearly supported by data, such as referring to 'Young adult' in the final paragraph. These elements place the response firmly in the middle tier of achievement, displaying solid coverage of the prompt with room for greater precision and thoroughness in data reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for each year. Information and ideas are generally presented in a logical sequence. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in the awkward transition 'followed by sleeping, at 32% .' which is punctuated as a sentence fragment, and the slightly disjointed flow in the final paragraph. Referencing and cohesive devices are adequate for the task, but they lack the flexibility and seamless progression required for higher bands. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, though the internal connections between sentences could be smoothed to improve readability.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to time allocation and data reporting, such as 'proportion', 'considerably', and 'accounted for'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and comparative structures, but these are occasionally coupled with inaccuracies in word choice or phrasing, such as 'Young adult spent much time on relaxing' instead of 'adults spent more time'. Spelling is generally accurate, but minor slips and unnatural collocations prevent the vocabulary from achieving greater precision. Nevertheless, the lexical range is sufficient to communicate the main points clearly without impeding the reader's understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at comparative structures and relative clauses. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues in the opening sentence ('The two pie charts compares'), tense confusion in the overview ('were significantly increase' instead of 'increased'), punctuation errors like comma splices or misplaced periods ('at 32% .'), and missing articles or pluralisation errors in the final paragraph ('each activities'). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to restrict the response to this level. A better control over verb forms and prepositional phrasing would significantly enhance grammatical accuracy.
