Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie charts shown illustrate the daily life routine of working persons in 1958 and 2008.

These graphs show how much time of a person's daily routine is spent performing different activities like sleeping, working, playing, outing, and relaxing.

These graphs are based on various parametres. In 1958, people spend one third of their time working while similar amount of time sleeping. During rest of the day, they performed other activities like outing, playing, travelling to work or just relaxing at home.

Conversly, in 2008, workload has increased to 42% and it has suppressed the other activites. Now people have less time to sleep. People spend more time than before travelling to their work and prefer to relax at home in their free time. Friends and family time has shrunk from one-fifth of the day to just 6%. However, people still consume same time playing sports as they did in 1958.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the main parts of the task by identifying and reporting key features from both pie charts, such as the increase in working hours and the reduction in sleeping and socializing time. However, some areas are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data interpretation. For example, the statement that people consume the same time playing sports as they did in 1958 overlooks the fact that sports accounted for 0% (or were unmentioned) in 1958 and 7% in 2008, meaning they actually increased rather than remained static. Additionally, the overview tends to blend into the body paragraphs rather than forming a distinct summary. To reach a higher band, the response should provide a more precise overview of the major trends and ensure all data comparisons are strictly accurate according to the provided charts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response presents an overall coherent arrangement, and information is generally easy to follow. There is a logical progression from an introductory description to comparative body paragraphs. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. The writer relies heavily on basic transitional words and phrases, and referencing can occasionally feel abrupt, such as shifting between ideas without smooth connective tissue. Furthermore, paragraphing is somewhat disorganized, with excessive short, single-sentence paragraphs that disrupt the flow of the text. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer should group sentences into more unified, well-developed paragraphs and use a wider, more natural range of cohesive devices to link ideas together fluidly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic meanings related to time allocation and daily routines. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'parametres', 'Conversly', and 'suppressed', demonstrating an ambition to use a varied lexicon. However, there are instances of inaccurate word choice and spelling slips, such as 'parametres' (parameters), 'Conversly' (Conversely), and 'activites' (activities), along with slightly unnatural phrasing like 'workload has increased' in place of 'the proportion of time spent working has increased'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher level of precision. To progress, the writer needs to expand their range of functional academic vocabulary and carefully check spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to structure sentences with relative variety, such as 'In 1958, people spend one third of their time working while similar amount of time sleeping.' There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies ('spend' instead of 'spent'), missing articles ('a similar amount'), and prepositional errors ('time playing sports as they did'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and the errors present rarely impede overall communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure greater accuracy in verb tenses, article usage, and subject-verb agreement.
