Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, earning it a modest score in this criterion. While the student attempts to provide an overview and summarize the data regarding how working adults spent their time in 1958 and 2008, the information is often inaccurate or confused. For instance, the student states that "playing sports which remain constant in both years" (which was actually 7% in 2008, but sports did not appear as a category in 1958 on the provided chart). Furthermore, some key data points are misreported, such as claiming working was "hiking 33% to 42%" while also mentioning "hiking 33%". The overview attempts to capture main trends, but the lack of accurate data reporting and limited development of comparisons prevent the response from achieving a higher band. To improve, the writer must ensure that all figures and trends cited closely reflect the actual visual data provided in the prompt and present a clearer, more precise summary of the main features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates some organization, but lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and separate body paragraphs for each year; however, the internal structuring of these paragraphs is frequently disjointed. Cohesive devices are often used inaccurately or repetitively, such as "At the initial stages," "On the other hand," and "Finally," which sometimes do not fit the logical flow of a pie chart comparison. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, making it hard for the reader to follow the progression of ideas. For example, sentences like "At the initial stages, in 1958, majority the one day spent by working adults on various activities were grow into two categories" create confusion. To reach the next level, the writer needs to ensure that sentences within paragraphs are logically linked and that cohesive devices are used more naturally and accurately to guide the reader through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that cause some difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as "drametically decline" and "shraply," but these attempts are marred by spelling and word-form errors (e.g., "shraply" instead of sharply, "remian" instead of remain). There are also awkward word choices and phrasing throughout the text, such as "working senior citizen," "kith and kin," and "several ratio was fluctuate among on it," which do not fit the formal tone required for an Academic Task 1 response. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding their range of functional descriptive vocabulary (such as verbs and adverbs for trends) and ensure accurate spelling and word formation. Using precise terms related to data presentation, such as "proportion," "percentage," and "decrease," will also significantly enhance lexical quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., "the working and sleeping were highest," "the sleeping were been drametically decline"), incorrect article usage (e.g., "the playing sports"), faulty prepositions, and non-standard sentence construction (e.g., "The two pie charts compared, the working senior citizen in a particular country spent their time..."). These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning. To improve, the writer needs to focus on foundational grammar, ensuring proper clause structures, correct verb tenses for describing data, and accurate subject-verb agreement. Simplifying complex sentence attempts until basic accuracy is achieved will also help reduce the frequency of errors.
