Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie charts compare the daily routines of working adults in a specific country across several daily activities. Overall, it can be seen that working adults spent most of their time at work and sleeping, while other activities, such as relaxing at home or hanging out with friends and family, accounted for a significant proportion of their daily routine.

Between 1958 and 2008, the proportion of time spent on work and sleep showed opposite trends. Working hours sharply climbed from 33% to 42%, whereas sleeping fell from 32% to 25%. Furthermore, a declining trend was observed in the time allocated to hanging out with friends and family, which dropped from 19% to 6%. In contrast, the average hours for traveling to work by working adults slightly increased from 2% to 8%. By 2008, a similar upward pattern was observed for relaxing at home, indicating a slight increase from 8% to 13%. Lastly, sports accounted for a steady trend, hovering around 6% to 8% of the daily routine of working personnel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by selecting and reporting the main features of the two pie charts, providing a clear overview at the outset and making relevant comparisons across years. Working hours, sleep, and family time are accurately contrasted. However, the response shows minor data misinterpretations: the text states that traveling to work slightly increased from 2% to 8% (whereas it increased from 2% to 7%) and misattributes the percentage for travel in 2008 (stating 8% instead of 7%, and calling sports a steady trend when it only appears in 2008). These minor inaccuracies and slightly under-developed extensions keep the score at this level, showing elements of both bands.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. The response is divided logically into an introduction with an overview, and a body paragraph detailing the trends. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Furthermore', 'In contrast', and 'By 2008'. However, referencing and transitions occasionally feel somewhat mechanical rather than entirely natural or seamless. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but to reach the next band, the integration of data points and transitions would need to be smoother and more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The response employs an adequate and generally precise range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional terms such as 'proportion', 'allocated', 'hovering', and 'trend'. There are successful attempts to use less common lexical items like 'sharply climbed' and 'declining trend'. While word choice is mostly appropriate, there are occasional minor inaccuracies in collocation or data interpretation wording, such as describing sports as a 'steady trend' based on a single year of data. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, allowing the message to be communicated clearly without impediment.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

A good variety of sentence structures is utilized throughout the response, including both simple and complex forms like 'the proportion of time spent on work and sleep showed opposite trends' and 'while other activities... accounted for a significant proportion'. There are frequent error-free sentences, and the control over verb tenses (past simple for 1958 and 2008 data) is generally well maintained. Punctuation is used correctly. A few minor errors persist, such as the awkward phrasing 'average hours for traveling to work by working adults', but these do not impede communication. Good control of grammar is evident.
