Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some key features from the charts but containing notable inaccuracies and underdeveloped ideas. For instance, the student states that going out with family and friends decreased from 19% to 7%, whereas the 2008 data shows it at 6% with a separate category for playing sports at 7%. Furthermore, the summary includes personal commentary and subjective value judgments, such as calling a decrease in outdoor activities 'a good sign', which is not appropriate for an academic report. To reach a higher level, the response needs to accurately report all major trends without subjective bias, ensure all data points are cited correctly, and provide a fully developed overview of the main changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text demonstrates some organization, but there is no clear overall progression, leading to a disjointed reading experience. Paragraphing is haphazard, with single-sentence paragraphs and abrupt transitions that do not effectively connect ideas. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the repeated mechanical use of 'While' and 'Thus' at the start of sentences without proper clause structures. Pronoun referencing and logical sequencing require significant improvement so that information flows naturally from one point to the next. To achieve better cohesion, the writer should group related data logically, use a wider variety of transitional markers correctly, and ensure clear paragraph boundaries for introduction, body details, and overview.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable word choice and collocation errors. Phrases like 'out-growth', 'deprivation of different activities', and 'doing job' sound unnatural and strain communication. There are also awkward reformulations of chart categories, such as 'resting time' and 'Office hours'. Although the writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, inaccurate usage impedes clarity. To improve lexical resource, the student should focus on learning precise academic collocations related to data reporting, such as 'proportion', 'percentage', and 'rose significantly', while avoiding overly complex or invented compound words that do not fit standard English usage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, and verb tenses, such as 'Rise have been seen', 'a gradual decrease have seen', and 'is plummeted'. Punctuation is also problematic, with incorrect spacing around commas and periods. These frequent grammatical errors cause difficulty for the reader and distract from the content. To move up to the next band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of error-free sentence structures, pay careful attention to active and passive voice consistency when describing data over time, and thoroughly proofread work to eliminate basic agreement and tense errors.
