Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers some of the main features of the charts, but the reporting is incomplete and lacks a clear overview. While the student attempts to highlight certain trends, such as the increase in working hours from 33% in 1958 to 42% in 2008, and the introduction of playing sports at 7%, some details are inaccurately described or under-developed. For instance, the reference to relaxation decreasing in 1958 is confused, as the charts actually show 8% for 1958 and 13% for 2008. Furthermore, the position is not always clear due to vague phrasing, and key comparisons between the two years are missing or only partially addressed. To move to a higher band, the student should ensure all major trends are accurately reported, avoid factual contradictions, and include a clear, cohesive overview of the most striking changes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The organization of the response lacks clear overall progression and logical sequencing. The text is divided into rudimentary paragraphs, but transitions between ideas feel abrupt and mechanical, using repetitive phrases such as 'Delving deeply', 'On moving further', and 'On moving ahead'. Paragraphing is not used sufficiently to separate distinct points or categories of activities logically. Additionally, referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of comparisons between 1958 and 2008. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to structure the report into a clear introduction with an overview, followed by well-organized body paragraphs that group related data logically, using accurate and natural cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There is heavy repetition of basic terms like 'percentage', 'year', and 'adults'. Noticeable word-choice and word-form errors occur throughout the text, such as 'decreasing the sleeping percentages' instead of 'a decrease in the percentage of sleep', and 'the Relaxation is decreases'. Expressions like 'the importance not much given to sleep' sound unnatural and strain the reader's interpretation. To improve lexical resource, the student should expand their range of vocabulary by incorporating less common synonyms, precise task-specific terminology related to data trends (e.g., 'rose', 'declined', 'proportion'), and ensure correct word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions or run-on structures without proper punctuation. When complex sentences are attempted, they are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors in grammar, subject-verb agreement, and articles. Examples include 'the working percentage is less and it is increased in year 2008' and 'the travelling to work is necessary it play less role'. Punctuation is largely neglected, with missing periods and commas causing sentences to run together. To progress, the student must work on sentence boundaries, improve control over tense consistency when describing past data, and reduce basic grammatical errors.
