Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview and reporting the main features of the two pie charts from 1958 and 2008. Key figures such as the rise in working hours from 33% to 42% and the drop in sleeping time from 32% to 25% are accurately identified and compared. However, some aspects are unevenly developed or contain slight inaccuracies; for instance, the writer mentions that playing sports remained stable, but the data indicates it was 0% in 1958 and 7% in 2008, meaning it actually appeared as a new activity rather than remaining stable. To reach a higher band, the overview and details must present every trend with complete accuracy and extend the comparisons between the two years more thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The report has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, beginning with an introductory paragraph, followed by a clear overview, and then body paragraphs detailing each year. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, such as phrases like 'By overall analysis', 'The first chart shows', and 'The chart illustrating the year'. However, cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally affected by phrasing choices. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the introduction, overview, and specific chart details, but a more flexible and varied use of transition signals would elevate the response to the next level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate to accomplish the task, with attempts to use less common items and varied reporting verbs and nouns, such as 'proportions', 'contributed', and 'invested'. Nevertheless, there are noticeable lexical errors, awkward word choices, and non-standard collocations throughout the text. Examples include 'percentages of spendage of time', 'playing ports' (a typo for sports), and stating that family and friends 'hold significant proportion'. These inaccuracies do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the score. To improve, the writer should focus on natural word formation, accurate collocations, and avoiding repetitive or unnatural phrasing like 'spendage'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to handle multi-clause structures such as 'while hours invested in playing ports remained stable'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including preposition and article issues like 'in the day of working adults' and 'od working adult', as well as subject-verb agreement slips such as 'The percentage held by travelling to work and playing sports hold'. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over articles and prepositions.
