Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response makes an attempt to address the prompt by reporting data from both pie charts, satisfying the basic requirements for covering the task. However, the information is only partially presented, and some key features are inaccurately described or underdeveloped. For instance, the introduction contains a confusing and inaccurate phrasing ('the adults were working in a different countries'), and the overview sentence ('working time increased being to at the end') is unclear and fails to provide a well-developed summary of the main trends. While the student attempts to contrast the 1958 and 2008 data, the selection of data lacks full clarity, and the explanation of changes over time remains limited. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present a clear, comprehensive overview of the overall trends first, followed by a more accurate and fully supported comparison of the specific categories across both years without mechanical listing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text shows some basic organisation by separating the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs into distinct sections. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical flow between ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing sentence boundaries. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and often inappropriately, such as the abrupt use of 'Whlie', 'Initially', 'On the other hand', and 'In addition'. Furthermore, referencing and paragraph links are weak, causing the response to feel disjointed as it moves from one activity to the next. The final sentence trails off incomplete ('...significantlly rose 6% re'), which further harms the structural cohesion. To improve, the writer should use logical sequencing, ensure each paragraph has a clear thematic focus, and employ cohesive devices more naturally to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. While there is an attempt to use comparative vocabulary (e.g., 'largest proportion', 'gradually rose', 'dramatically decline'), many word choices and collocations are unnatural or incorrect, such as 'speeling' instead of sleeping, 'relexing' instead of relaxing, and 'exatly' for exactly. There are also frequent issues with word forms, such as 'significantlly rose' and 'travelling to work time soar'. Spelling errors and incorrect lexical choices impede smooth reading. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary, use less common lexical items more accurately, and pay closer attention to precise word formation, spelling, and standard collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple or poorly constructed sentences where attempts at complexity consistently result in errors. There are frequent grammatical mistakes throughout the text, including tense confusion ('adults were working... and spent'), incorrect prepositions ('spend time to going our'), missing articles, and faulty subject-verb agreement. For example, phrases like 'percentages of the day spend by working adult' and 'they were adding playing sports 7% when, travelling to work time soar' display a lack of control over basic syntax and clause combination. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning. To improve, the writer must focus on basic sentence construction, accurate verb forms, correct prepositions, and eliminating fundamental grammatical inaccuracies.
