Student answer (Band 5.0)

the pie chart shows a comparison among working adults about spending day in various activities both in 1958 and 2008.

In 1958, we can see the limited amount of activites done by working adults. Working is shown as leading activity in where adults spent most of their time. following that, the time spent on sleeping comes quite close to the time spent on working. A few time of the working adults day is also spent by hanging out with family and friends. then comes relaxing at home, which is also seen. the least time workers spent their time on is travelling to work.

if we look at the pie chart from 2008, it shows an extra activity done by working adults as compared in 1958. the additional activity that is seen includes spendig time on playing sports. the working time sees a sharp increase in 2008. meanwhile, spending time on time on sleep shows reduction followed by huge decrease im spending time with family and friends too.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially because, while it attempts to cover both years, the information presented is quite limited and lacks sufficient detail and data citation. For example, the student mentions that working is the leading activity and notes a sharp increase in 2008, but omits key figures such as the exact percentages or a comprehensive overview of all categories (failing to mention playing sports in the overview, though touching on it later). Furthermore, the comparison between the two years is vague, lacking precise data points from the visual input. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to select and report key features more thoroughly, integrate specific data from the charts to support the description, and present a clearer, more complete overview of the main trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organisation in the response, with a separate paragraph for each year, but it lacks clear overall progression and logical linking. Cohesive devices are either repetitive or inadequate, relying on basic transitions like 'In 1958' and 'if we look at the pie chart from 2008'. Additionally, referencing and paragraphing could be improved to guide the reader smoothly through the comparison. For instance, the transition between discussing individual activities in the first body paragraph feels disjointed, using vague phrases like 'then comes relaxing at home, which is also seen'. To achieve a higher band, the writer should employ a wider range of cohesive devices more accurately and ensure that ideas flow logically from one sentence to the next without mechanical sequencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The writer relies heavily on basic or repetitive terms, such as 'activites', 'spending day', and 'leading activity', alongside noticeable spelling and word choice errors like 'spendig' and 'im spending time'. There are also awkward collocations and phrasing, such as 'A few time of the working adults day' and 'the least time workers spent their time on'. These errors and the restricted vocabulary range cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student must expand their lexical repertoire by incorporating more precise vocabulary related to data analysis, such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'substantial growth', or 'marginal decline', and ensure accurate word forms and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic active forms. Attempts at complex sentences or clauses are either absent or faulty, and there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include missing capitalization at the beginning of sentences (e.g., 'the pie chart shows'), missing prepositions or articles (e.g., 'spent their time on travelling' instead of 'travelling', or 'as compared in 1958'), and subject-verb agreement slips. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to increase the variety of complex grammatical structures used and exercise greater accuracy with prepositions, articles, and sentence boundaries.
