Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response attempts to cover all parts of the task by addressing the main categories in the pie charts, such as working, sleeping, and relaxing at home. However, some ideas and figures are under-developed, inaccurate, or confused. For instance, the text states that travelling to work increased to '18% of time spent in a day by the year 2008', whereas the chart clearly shows it was 7%. Furthermore, the description of sleeping states it 'recuded to one-fouth proportion', which contradicts the data value of 25%. While an overview is provided at the beginning, the mechanical misreading of figures and lack of precise support for every key feature prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall arrangement with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs focusing on different activities. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Focusing on three major activities', 'Furthermore', and 'Lastly' are used to structure the text logically, though some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information, such as grouping the major activities together and the remaining activities in the final paragraph. To reach the next band, the logical progression needs to be tighter and referencing errors must be eliminated.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'proportion of time', 'major and minor amount', and 'dramatic fall'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'illutsrates' (illustrates), 'recuded' (reduced), and 'spent' instead of 'spend' or 'spend' instead of 'spent'. Some expressions are awkward or imprecise, such as 'every activities had a rise'. These lexical slips and inaccuracies demonstrate the characteristics of this band level, where vocabulary is minimally adequate but contains frequent errors that do not completely impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and time markers. However, control over grammar and sentence structure is inconsistent, with frequent errors such as subject-verb agreement issues ('every activities had'), incorrect prepositions ('spent of a day'), and tense inconsistencies ('used to spent'). Attempts at complex structures are often faulty, and articles are occasionally misused. These frequent errors in grammar require some effort from the reader to decode the intended meaning, placing the grammatical range and accuracy firmly at this level.
