Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across both years, successfully satisfying the requirements for the lower band while showing elements of the next. The overview clearly highlights that working and sleeping dominated both years, and notes significant shifts such as the drop in socialising and the increase in working hours. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or lack full elaboration—for instance, the mention that playing sports remained the same is stated without integrating the actual data point (7% in both years). Key data points like the 42% working time in 2008 are well reported, but greater depth in contrasting the minor categories would elevate the task response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas, moving from an introduction and clear overview into detailed body paragraphs comparing the two years. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the response. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as "Overall," "In comparison," and "Moreover." However, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical or faulty, as seen in referencing and transitional phrases like "Initially, adults liks to go out with friends or family as graph shows higher percentage besides work or sleep". To reach the next level, transitions could be made smoother and referencing clearer to ensure the flow is entirely natural and unobtrusive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as "drastically," "commute," and "percentage." However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, such as "liks" for likes, "droped" for dropped, "lessend" for lessened, "adulats" for adults, and "palying" for playing. Collocations and word forms are occasionally awkward, such as "spent their most amount of time in working" instead of on working. While communication is not impeded and the vocabulary is minimally adequate, eliminating these spelling errors and refining word choices are necessary for further improvement.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating comparative structures such as "increased to 42% which causes decrease in sleeping time." There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies and missing articles, such as "as graph shows" instead of "as the graph shows" and "relaxing time at home is increased" instead of increased. Punctuation errors are also present, notably missing capitalisation at the beginning of sentences and after full stops, such as in "Overall, In both years..." and "however, the percentage...". These errors rarely impede communication, reflecting solid control at the current level.
