Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main features of the two pie charts, highlighting working and sleeping as the dominant activities in both 1958 and 2008. However, the task is only partially covered because some data points contain inaccuracies or confusion, such as the statement that working increased by 'about 9%' while also stating the actual 2008 percentage was 42% (which mathematically is an increase of 9 percentage points from 33%, but the phrasing is confusing). Furthermore, the overview mentions that other activities seem less common due to 'various activities', which is unclear and underdeveloped. Key comparisons between the years are attempted, but the support lacks clarity and precision, placing this response at the halfway point for task achievement where ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a clear attempt to structure the response into an introduction, an overview, and detail paragraphs. However, overall progression is hindered by mechanical and faulty cohesion, as well as poor punctuation and spacing throughout the text (e.g., 'Overall,it is noticable', 'years.while, other'). Paragraphing is present, but internal referencing and logical flow are compromised by awkward transitions like 'In detail,' and 'By 2008,'. While the essay has a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to group information logically, the inadequate and inaccurate use of cohesive devices keeps the response firmly at this intermediate level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing statistical data, such as 'proportion', 'percentage', and 'increase'. However, there are numerous noticeable errors in word form, spelling, and word choice that cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'porpotion' (repeatedly misspelled), 'noticable', 'wheareas', and awkward phrasing like 'the most high proportion is owned by working'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are often marred by collocation and spelling inaccuracies, restricting the lexical score to this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic subject-verb constructions. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, seen in problematic clauses like 'that how spent their day' and 'the people who relaxing at home increase'. There are frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles throughout the text—such as 'sleeping was decline and arrive the level' and 'the percentage of working increase'. These frequent grammatical and punctuation errors cause noticeable disruption and difficulty for the reader.
