Student answer (Band 5.0)
The pie charts illustrate the main features how working adults spent their time in specific country in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, working remain the dominant proportion in both charts. Going out with family and sleeping contributed the 2nd most highest proportions. There was a small contribuiton of playing sports and travelling to work.
In 1958, young adults spent most of their time in working accounted for 33%. Youngsters spent least in relaxing at home that contirbuted 8%. Both proportions slightly rose to 42% and 13% in 2008. Whereas, sleeping contibution was 32% in 1958, but the figure fell to 25% in 2008. Youngsters going out with family and friends was accounted for 19% in 1958 which dropped massively to 6% in 2008. The travelling to work was the smallest portion in both years accounted for 2% which marginally increased to 7% in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task partially, as it attempts to report the main features and make comparisons, but it falls short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 143 words. The overview is somewhat inaccurate or limited, stating that 'working remain the dominant proportion' without fully synthesising the overall trends across the two years. While key data points such as working percentages (33% and 42%) are mentioned, some details are inaccurate or lack clarity, such as referring to working adults as 'young adults' and 'youngsters' throughout the text, which misrepresents the demographic given in the prompt. To reach a higher band, the response must meet the minimum word count requirement, provide a clearer and more accurate overview of the main trends without demographic inaccuracies, and fully develop the comparisons between 1958 and 2008.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response presents some organisation with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and a body paragraph, but there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, though the body paragraph mixes several different categories and years in a somewhat disjointed manner. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often inaccurate or repetitive, such as the repetitive use of 'contributed', 'accounted for', and 'in 1958/in 2008'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, particularly with pronoun use and sentence linkage. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to ensure a logical sequence of information with clearer transitions between sentences and paragraphs, and avoid mechanical repetition of cohesive structures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task, containing noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty or sound unnatural. The writer uses basic vocabulary and attempts some less common phrasing, but this results in frequent word-choice and word-form errors, such as 'contribuiton', 'contirbuted', 'contibution', and 'most highest'. Additionally, using terms like 'youngsters' to describe working adults is inaccurate for this demographic. To move to a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, use less common lexical items more accurately, and pay closer attention to word formation and spelling to ensure smoother communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic subject-verb-object patterns. Attempts at complex or participial structures are frequently faulty, leading to grammar errors such as 'working adults spent their time in specific country', 'working remain the dominant proportion', and 'spent most of their time in working accounted for 33%'. There are frequent errors in prepositions, verb forms, and subject-verb agreement that can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentence structures and exercise better control over grammatical patterns, articles, and verb tenses.
