Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two pie charts compare the activities on which working adults spent time every day in the year of 1958 and 2006.

Overall, work time for adults has increased and remains the dominant category in 1958 and 2008. In comparison, sleeping hours have been decreased. More time is consumed in travelling to work and relaxing at home. Additionally, family time was reduced to make space for playing sports category.

In 1958, working was a significant part of an employee's life, accounting for 33%. Moreover, they used 32% of their time sleeping, while the category of hanging out with friends and family made up 19%. They relaxed at home for 8% of their time and the time required for travelling to work accounted for 2%. The data for remaining proportion is not provided.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear overview of the main trends alongside specific data points from both years. For example, the student correctly highlights that working hours increased from 33% in 1958 to 42% in 2008, and accurately contrasts this with the drop in sleeping hours. The overview effectively captures the primary shifts, such as the increase in work time and decrease in sleep, though it includes a minor chronological slip by referencing the year 2006 in the introduction instead of 2008. The main features are selected well and supported with accurate figures from the charts, such as the 7% allocated to playing sports in 2008. To reach a higher band, the overview could be more fully developed by synthesizing the broader societal changes rather than just listing individual category movements, ensuring absolute consistency in dates throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly into an introduction, an overall summary paragraph, and two distinct body paragraphs detailing the specific data for 1958 and 2008 respectively. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'Overall,' 'In comparison,' and 'By the year of 2008.' However, some transitional phrases feel a little mechanical, and referencing could be slightly tighter, as seen in the phrasing 'The data for remaining proportion is not provided' which sits somewhat awkwardly at the end of the third paragraph. Paragraphing is handled appropriately, ensuring that each part of the prompt is clearly separated and easy for the reader to follow. To move to a higher band, the transitions between sentences could be made more seamless and varied.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'dominant category,' 'accounting for,' and 'proportion.' There are appropriate lexical choices related to data reporting, and communication is clear despite a few inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as saying 'sleeping hours have been decreased' instead of 'decreased' (intransitive), or writing 'increased upto' as one word. Minor slips in prepositional collocations and word forms also occur, but they do not impede the reader's understanding. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision in word choice and incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated, less common vocabulary with fewer minor mechanical errors in word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases ('In 1958, working was a significant part...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, showing decent control over basic grammar and punctuation. However, some grammatical inaccuracies persist, such as passive voice misuse ('sleeping hours have been decreased') and preposition or article omissions ('the time required for travelling to work', 'the remaining proportion'). These errors rarely impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher level of grammatical polish. To reach the next band, the student should aim to increase the frequency of error-free complex structures and eliminate minor slips in tense consistency and article usage.
