Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task partially, providing a basic overview and some specific data from the charts, but it lacks full development. While the introduction outlines the charts, the overview is somewhat unclear due to awkward phrasing such as 'work of adults clearly leading in term of time consumption'. Key features are mentioned, such as working being the highest and sports being the lowest, but the reporting of data contains inaccuracies and generalizations. For instance, the grouping of sports, relaxing, and travelling as 'around 17%' in 1958 lacks precise grounding in the visual data. Furthermore, some data points are omitted or described vaguely. To move to a higher band, the response needs to present a clearer, more accurate summary of all main trends and ensure that data points are reported with greater precision and full development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, separating the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs for each year. Information is generally grouped by year, which provides a basic logical sequence. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, and referencing is not always clear. For example, transitional phrases and sentence linkages are occasionally abrupt, such as 'whereas, playing sport took the least amount of time in both years' and the fragmented sentence 'Which is followed by going out with family.' To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to improve the flow between sentences and paragraphs by using cohesive devices more naturally and avoiding broken sentence structures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing a basic range to describe percentages and activities. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation. Examples include 'in term of time consumption', 'gave the same important to sleep', and 'adult Mankind spent more hours in working'. Additionally, capitalization errors occur mid-sentence, such as 'in 1958, People spent'. While the vocabulary attempts to convey the data, these awkward phrasings and word choice errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should use more precise academic vocabulary and ensure correct word forms and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include missing capitalization at the start of sentences ('in 1958', 'in 2008'), incorrect prepositions ('travelling at work' instead of 'travelling to work'), and punctuation errors such as sentence fragments ('Which is followed by going out with family'). To reach a higher band, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy and improve control over basic punctuation and prepositions.
