Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making comparisons between the two years, which keeps it above the threshold of lower bands. However, some aspects are under-developed or inaccurately reported. For instance, the student states that playing sports remained almost similar, yet the data shows sports were completely absent in 1958 and accounted for 7% in 2008. Furthermore, the overview mentions that going out with friends and family was the least in 2008, overlooking that travelling to work also shared a low percentage or that other categories existed. While the response presents key trends such as working and sleeping, the lack of careful data checking and some underdeveloped comparisons prevent it from reaching a higher level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at organizing information into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific data points. Cohesive devices are employed, such as "Overall", "In contrast", "Followed by", and "Similarly", although some referencing is slightly mechanical or faulty, as seen in the phrasing "the major change over the years had shown by". Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate general trends from specific statistical breakdowns. Progression is generally apparent, though the logical flow between sentences occasionally stumbles due to awkward transitions and minor cohesion issues.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic trends and proportions through terms like "distribution", "dominated", "accounting", and "significantly". The writer attempts less common vocabulary items such as "dominant sector" and "minor contribution". However, there are notable word choice and spelling errors that prevent a higher mark, such as "beacme" and "ramained". Collocation and word formation are occasionally imprecise, for example writing "the major change over the years had shown by", but the lexical errors do not severely impede communication and remain characteristic of this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. However, grammatical accuracy is limited by frequent errors in verb forms, voice, and prepositions. Examples include "The pie charts demonstrates" (subject-verb agreement), "had shown by" (incorrect passive voice), and temporal inaccuracies like "in 1959" when referring to the chart's 1958 data. While these errors rarely completely impede understanding, the persistence of faulty structures across both simple and complex sentences keeps the grammar score at this level.
