Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making comparisons between the two years, which keeps it above the lower bands. However, the development is somewhat restricted and mechanically repetitive. For instance, the opening misinterprets the data slightly by stating the charts show adults working in "various fields," whereas the data actually depicts how time is distributed across different daily activities. While the main figures are reported, such as working increasing from 33% to 42% and sleeping declining from 32% to 25%, some interpretations lack precision. To reach a higher standard, the overview needs to synthesize the broader trends more clearly without minor misinterpretations, and the body paragraphs should integrate the data points more smoothly to highlight significant shifts rather than listing each category in a formulaic manner.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs and a brief conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to structure the response, utilizing transitional phrases such as "To commence with," "Additionally," "On the other hand," and "In conclusion." However, the use of these cohesive devices is at times mechanical or somewhat faulty, such as "Instead of this" and "At the last," which detracts from natural flow and precise logical relationships. Paragraphing is present, but internal progression within paragraphs could be better managed to ensure smoother transitions between individual data comparisons. Refining the variety and accuracy of cohesive links will help achieve a more seamless progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to proportions and activities, such as "proportion," "activities," "relaxing," and "travelling." However, lexical control is inconsistent. There are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including "give" instead of "given," "thier" instead of "their," "demonstrate" instead of "demonstrates," "obtain" instead of "account for" or "occupy," "aquires," and "infromative." While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. To improve, the writer needs to expand the range of vocabulary used for reporting data trends—such as using varied verbs and adverbial modifiers—and eliminate basic spelling mistakes through careful proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of structures, relying mostly on straightforward sentence patterns alongside frequent attempts at complex sentences that contain grammatical errors. Examples of structural and agreement issues include "how adults working spent thier time" (word order and tense), "adults work in similar activities such as working which takes" (relative clause punctuation and verb agreement), "the highest time spent by adults are on working" (subject-verb agreement), and "it is slightly raise" (incorrect passive/active verb form). Frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, and tense consistency occur throughout the text and frequently cause difficulty for the reader. Incorporating a wider mix of error-free complex structures and ensuring accurate verb tense handling are essential steps for improvement.
