Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a summary of the data with some key features and comparisons included, but missing an overall summary or clear overview of the main trends. While the writer reports figures for both 1958 and 2008 such as 'working with 33%' and 'growing almost 42%', the ideas remain limited and under-developed. Certain features are described with a lack of precision, and some details are generalized without adequate support or extension. To reach a higher level, the response needs to select and clearly highlight the most significant trends across the two pie charts, such as the overall shift in time allocation, supported by a distinct overview paragraph that outlines the main differences between the years.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text shows some organization with a basic overall arrangement, attempting to separate ideas chronologically or by activity. However, there is no clear overall progression due to poor paragraphing and a lack of proper structure. Cohesive devices are sometimes faulty or repetitive, with basic links like 'firstly', 'moreover', and 'on the other hand' used mechanically rather than flexibly. Referencing can also be unclear, making it occasionally difficult to follow the flow of information. To improve coherence and cohesion, the response should be divided into distinct paragraphs—an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for detailed comparisons—and use a wider, more natural range of cohesive phrases to connect ideas smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey basic comparative ideas such as 'higher', 'increase', and 'decrease'. However, there is a lack of varied or less common lexical items, and noticeable errors in word choice and spelling occur throughout the text, such as 'demostrate', 'decrese', and 'growth very quicky'. These lexical shortcomings reflect a restricted range. To achieve a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of vocabulary related to data trends and proportions, ensuring correct word forms, collocations, and accurate spelling to enhance precision and clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex clauses that are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing subject-verb agreement ('the pie chart illustrate', 'adult spent'), incorrect verb tenses ('adult start new playing sports'), and missing articles or prepositions. Punctuation and capitalization are also neglected, with run-on sentences and missing capitalization at the beginning of sentences. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to exercise better control over basic grammatical structures, use correct tense consistency, and employ complex sentence forms with greater accuracy.
