Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, stopping abruptly at only 74 words. As a result, the task is addressed only minimally and tangentially. While the writer attempts to introduce the chart and mention a few data points from 1958, such as working at 33% and travelling to work at 2%, the overview is incomplete, comparisons between the two years are missing, and key features of the 2008 chart are entirely omitted. To achieve a higher score, the student must write at least 150 words, provide a clear overall summary of the main trends, and thoroughly report and compare data from both time periods.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The information and ideas are not arranged coherently. The response breaks off abruptly after only three sentences, preventing any clear logical organisation or progression throughout the text. Paragraphing is disjointed, and the relationships between sentences are underdeveloped. There is an attempt to use basic introductory phrases like 'Overall,' but cohesive devices are inadequate to link the ideas effectively. To improve in this criterion, the writer needs to structure the report logically into clear paragraphs—separating the introduction, overview, and body details—and use a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with awkward phrasing such as 'adult population doing a lot of hard work' and 'working percentage were found around'. There are noticeable errors in word choice and expression, such as referring to the countries as 'a different countries', which strains the reader's understanding. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task. To progress to a higher band, the student should employ a wider and more precise range of lexical items suitable for academic reports, such as precise verbs and nouns to describe statistical changes, and ensure greater accuracy in word choice and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of structures, consisting mainly of simple or faulty sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('working percentage were found') and awkward clause integration ('The pie chart indicates the working hours that how adult population...'). Punctuation and article usage are also inconsistent. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to practice constructing accurate and varied complex sentences, paying close attention to verb forms, prepositions, and structural patterns when reporting statistical data.
