Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts compare the proportions of spending the time on distinct activities by adults who had jobs in a specific country from 1958 to 2008.
From an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the people spent most of their day to do work, whilst smaller time of the day was spent on travelling to work in both years.
Looking at the details, less than half of the day was given to work by adults in 2008, however, this figure was slightly less in 1958, accounting for 33%. Additionally, they gave less priority to realx at home, noticing at merely 8% and 13% of the day in 1958 and 2008 orderly. In 1958, almost a third of the routine was allocated for sleeping, which reduced gradually to 25% after five decades.
Shifting attention towards reamaining details, 7% of their day spent on travelling to work and playing sports in 2008, whereas in 1958, people were least interested to travelling and spent almost similar time on playing games. As far as going out is concerned, in 1958, 19% preference of the day was given to hangout with friends and family, nevertheless it was not quite popular in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making comparisons between the two years, which keeps it above the lower band threshold. However, some ideas are under-developed or inadequately supported with precise data. For instance, the student states that travelling to work and playing sports accounted for 7% in 2008, but misrepresents the 1958 data by claiming people were least interested in travelling when the chart clearly shows 2%. Furthermore, the overview is somewhat simplistic, stating that people spent most of their day working while a smaller amount of time went to travelling, which covers only a fraction of the key trends. To achieve a higher band, the writer would need to provide a fully developed overview encompassing all major categories and ensure that all reported data points are accurate without misinterpreting the figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, moving logically from an introduction and overview to specific details. Information and ideas are generally sequenced, with transition phrases like "Looking at the details" and "Shifting attention towards remaining details" guiding the reader through the charts. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, and referencing is not always clear, as seen in expressions like "reamaining details" and confusing sentence structures in the final paragraph. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within sentences can feel awkward. To reach the next band, the student should ensure smoother transitions between ideas, eliminate mechanical linking phrases, and maintain clear logical progression throughout every sentence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as "proportions", "allocated", and "preference". However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies, awkward word choices, and spelling errors that prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Examples include "spending the time on distinct activities" instead of spending time on distinct activities, "realx" instead of relax, "orderly" instead of respectively, and "reamaining" instead of remaining. Furthermore, collocations such as "spent almost similar time" and "hangout with friends" are inappropriate for academic writing. To improve, the writer must expand their control of word formation, check spelling carefully, and use more precise academic collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a willingness to use subordinate clauses and comparative structures, such as "whereas in 1958, people were least interested...". There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of errors include prepositional and infinitive misuse like "spent most of their day to do work" instead of spending most of their day doing work, and issues with article usage and verb forms. The grammar control is consistent with a solid middle band, where simple sentences are generally accurate while attempts at more complex structures introduce occasional lapses. To progress further, the student should aim to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine structural accuracy.
