Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response satisfies the length requirement minimally, as it contains 124 words, which is below the 150-word minimum specified for Task 1. Regarding content, the student addresses all parts of the task by reporting on both years and selecting the main features, such as working being the largest proportion in both 1958 and 2008. An overview is present, noting the primary trends. However, some parts of the response are under-developed or imprecise; for instance, stating that traveling to work 'increased a little after 50 years' lacks specific comparative data integration in the overview. The figures cited from the charts are generally accurate, but the overall analysis remains basic, preventing the response from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview, followed by detailed body paragraphs for each year. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or repetitive, particularly in how data points are introduced sequentially without a wide variety of linking devices. Referencing and transitional phrases are adequate for the task, but the lack of more sophisticated cohesive mechanisms keeps the organization at a foundational level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic trends and proportions shown in the charts. The student attempts some less common vocabulary and appropriate statistical terms, such as 'proportion', 'accounted for', and 'the highest'. However, there are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as the misspelling 'recoreded' instead of recorded, and awkward phrasings like 'has the same rate which is 7% each'. These occasional errors and limitations in lexical range do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher level of precision and style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the response. There are examples of accurate complex structures, such as introductory dependent clauses ('In 1958, working represents...'). However, some grammatical errors and awkward structures persist, such as tense inconsistency ('represents' used instead of represented when discussing 1958) and subject-verb agreement issues like 'playing sports and travelling to work has the same rate'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication.
