Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main features of the pie charts by mentioning data points for both 1958 and 2008, such as the proportions for working, sleeping, and family time. However, the coverage is only partial and contains inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the student states that adults travelling to work reached 7% in 2008 while playing sports was also 7% (which is correct), but the overview contains a confusing and inaccurate generalization that 'the lowest percentage is consisted on various activities', which blurs the comparison. Additionally, some key figures are described in a somewhat mechanical way without fully developing the comparisons, keeping the response at a basic level of task fulfillment.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates some organisation with basic introductory and concluding overview sentences, as well as paragraph breaks for different chart features. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the use of cohesive devices is frequently mechanical or inaccurate, as seen in transitions like 'In terms of working the 33% adults were cosuming their time' and 'Futhermore'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the internal cohesion within sentences often feels disjointed, preventing a smooth and logical flow throughout the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are several noticeable spelling, word choice, and word form errors throughout the response, such as 'comapres' instead of compares, 'activites' instead of activities, 'consisted on' instead of consisted of, and 'cosuming' instead of consuming. Furthermore, awkward phrasing such as 'sleeping adults were approximately 32%' and 'no more adults playing sports in prior year' detracts from the quality of the writing and occasionally causes difficulty for the reader in grasping the exact meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is weak, resulting in frequent grammatical errors. There are issues with verb tenses and forms, such as 'it fall down' instead of fell down and 'its gradually rise' instead of it gradually rose. Prepositional use and article placement are also problematic, as seen in 'in the both years' and 'on work'. These frequent errors in grammar and sentence structure can cause some difficulty and hesitation for the reader.
