Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response attempts to present an overview and cover the main features of the two pie charts from 1958 and 2008, but the coverage is only partial and lacks clarity. While some key data points are mentioned—such as working increasing from 33% to 42% and sleeping decreasing from 32% to 25%—the summary contains inaccuracies in interpretation, such as stating that 'playing sports was not available' in 1958 rather than simply representing a new category or zero percentage in that year. The overview provided in the second paragraph is underdeveloped and confusing, merely stating that 'there is difference between two different years.' To reach a higher level, the response needs to provide a clear, well-developed overview outlining the main overarching trends, select and accurately report key data points without misinterpreting the absence of a category, and support comparisons more effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response displays some organization with an introductory attempt, body details, and a concluding set of observations, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, though the division of ideas feels arbitrary rather than structured logically around specific trends or time periods. Cohesive devices are minimal, mechanical, and occasionally inaccurate, such as using 'And providing main points' as a fragment sentence starter and relying heavily on repetitive transition phrases like 'After 1958' and 'As before.' Referencing is also weak, with ambiguous pronouns ('which') making it difficult to follow the logical links between ideas. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure a clear logical progression throughout, use paragraphing more effectively to group related information, and employ a wider, more natural range of cohesive devices without repetition.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic concepts such as 'working', 'sleeping', and 'percentage', but struggling with precision and collocation. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'playing games' instead of 'playing sports', 'dastricly' (drastic spelling error), 'has mention', and 'intrested about travelling'. Furthermore, terms are sometimes used inaccurately when describing data trends, such as 'has surpass the before number.' These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted vocabulary range. To improve, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of precise task-specific vocabulary, improve word formation, pay closer attention to spelling, and use appropriate collocations for describing statistical changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that frequently break down. There are persistent errors across various grammatical structures, including tense inconsistencies ('people has mention', 'working is incredibly increased', 'has decline'), missing auxiliary verbs, incorrect prepositions ('intrested about travelling'), and faulty subject-verb agreement ('5 activities was available'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, maintain consistent and accurate verb tenses when describing past data, and ensure accurate agreement and article usage throughout the text.
