Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie charts compare the percentage of time spent by individuals on different activities in a specific country between 1958 and 2008.

Overall, majority of adults spend most of their time of the day, working and sleeping. Going out with friends or family has been significantly decreased over time, and travelling to work has improved over years. Whereas, playing sports has been consistent throughout these years.

In 1958, Working and sleeping was given equal priority with percentage ratio of 33% and 32%, respectively. Hanging out with friends or family accounted for about 19% of total time spent in a day. Relaxing at home and playing sports were also of nearly equal significance, contributing 8% and 7% of their time. Lastly, negligible amount of time was dedicated for travelling to work that shows people prefer living near their workplace.

In 2008, majority of the priorities remained same, with most time allocated to working i.e., 42%. Sleeping time and going out with friends or family has seen a drastic downfall to 25% and 6%. On contrary, time spent relaxing at home rose to 13%, and travelling to work, which was of no significant value before, climbed to 7%. In the end, playing sports remained unchanged with passing years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between the two years, such as noting that "Working and sleeping was given equal priority" in 1958 and that working increased to 42% in 2008. An overview is successfully attempted in the second paragraph, outlining the main trends. However, some ideas remain under-developed or contain inaccuracies. For example, the statement that "playing sports has been consistent throughout these years" is partially flawed because playing sports is not present on the 1958 chart provided in the data (it only appears in 2008 at 7%), meaning this comparison is unsupported. Additionally, some details lack precision, such as describing travelling to work in 1958 as a "negligible amount" rather than specifically noting the 2% figure, which keeps the response at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly into an introduction, an overview paragraph, a detailed body paragraph for 1958, and a final body paragraph for 2008. Cohesive devices are used appropriately to guide the reader through the data, such as "In 1958", "Lastly", "In 2008", and "On contrary". Paragraphing is managed effectively, and referencing between sentences is generally clear, ensuring the text flows smoothly and maintains a coherent overall arrangement from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying numerical data and trends with phrases like "percentage ratio", "equal priority", and "drastic downfall". The writer attempts less common vocabulary, such as "negligible amount" and "drastic downfall", though there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as stating that travelling to work "has improved over years" (when meaning increased or grew) and using "On contrary" instead of "By contrast" or "On the contrary". Spelling and word-choice errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omission and misuse in "Overall, majority of adults spend...", subject-verb agreement issues like "Working and sleeping was given", and minor prepositional errors such as "dedicated for travelling". However, these structures and errors rarely impede communication, and the writer maintains a fair degree of control over punctuation and basic sentence construction throughout the essay.
