Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response satisfies the requirements for the lower half of the band while showing flashes of the next level by covering all parts of the task and presenting a clear overview of the main trends. Key features such as work and sleep dominating both years and the sharp drop in socialising are appropriately highlighted. However, the response suffers from a notable drawback because the length requirement is not met, falling short of the 150-word minimum at 126 words. Consequently, some data points are slightly underdeveloped, such as the missing initial figure for playing sports in 1958, and minor inaccuracies appear in the data reporting, such as the statement regarding travelling to work and sports in the final sentence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression and coherent arrangement throughout. Information and figures are logically sequenced, moving smoothly from a general introductory statement and overview into detailed body paragraphs comparing the two years. Cohesive devices are employed with reasonable flexibility, seen in phrases such as 'Overall', 'In 1958', 'Similarly', and 'Conversely'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, and referencing is generally clear, though minor mechanical phrasing slightly limits the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the overall meaning and attempting some less common lexical items such as 'substantially', 'noticeably', and 'conversely'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'the percentage of time that account on sleeping hours' instead of 'accounted for'. While these occasional errors do not impede communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching a higher band. Spelling and word forms are generally controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like passive voice and comparative clauses effectively. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as the missing space in 'adults in1958', a comma splice ('on work; It increased'), and structural awkwardness in the final sentence ('People spent time on sports and travelling to work were...'). Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, reflecting a typical performance for this level.
