Student answer (Band 6.0)
The following diagram illustrates the changing behaviour of working class for spending time in different activities from 1958 and 2008 in a particular country.
Overall, the workers strated spending more time in travelling to work, working and relaxing at home. On the other hand, they spend less time on other activities like sleeping and going out with friends and family.
Workers spend time 33% on working, 8% on relaxing at home and 2% on travelling to work in 1958 which increased to 42%, 13% and 7% respectively in 2008. While other activites shown decline in consuming time of working class, like in 1958 sleeping time declined from 32% to 25% and similarly for socializing 19% to just 7% in 2008.
One thing is important to notice here is that in 2008 people started to spend 7% of their time on playing different kind of sports which was not not noticable in 1958.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response identifies the main overall shifts: working, commuting and relaxing at home take larger shares in 2008, while sleeping and socialising take less. It also reports several figures accurately, including work (33% to 42%), sleep (32% to 25%) and travel (2% to 7%), and notes the new sports category. This gives a clear account of the key features. However, the socialising figure for 2008 is reported as 7%, whereas the chart shows 6%, and the overview could be more precise by highlighting that working becomes the largest activity while socialising falls markedly. The phrase “workers started spending more time” also overgeneralises, since time spent on some activities decreased. More exact comparisons and a sharper overview would strengthen the summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, comparisons of the figures, and a final point about sports. This makes the main progression easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “On the other hand,” and “While” help signal contrasts. The organisation is coherent, but cohesion is not always smooth. The third paragraph begins “Workers spend time” and then shifts into a long comparison, while “While other activities…” is not fully integrated with the preceding sentence. The final “One thing is important to notice here” is wordy and does not connect as naturally as a concise transition would. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more direct links between the overview and supporting details to make the progression more fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the chart’s main categories and changes, with relevant terms such as “increased,” “decline,” “socializing” and “spend time.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which makes parts of the report less precise. “Changing behaviour of working class” is not a natural description of the data, and “declined in consuming time” is an awkward collocation. There are also spelling errors, including “strated” and “activites,” and the repeated “not not noticable” weakens control. Aim for standard chart language such as “the proportion of the day spent on…” and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts some complex structures, including “While other activities…” and the relative clause “which was not…,” but control is inconsistent. For example, “from 1958 and 2008” uses the wrong preposition, and “Workers spend time 33% on working” has an awkward sentence structure that obscures the relationship between the figures and activities. Tense also shifts between “spend” and “started spending,” although the charts describe two past years. The sentence beginning “While other activities…” is a fragment because it lacks a main clause, and the final sentence contains repeated wording and faulty construction. Practise forming complete comparison sentences and maintaining past-tense reporting; greater accuracy in these patterns would make the information clearer.
