Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie charts compare the proportion of the day spent by working adults on different activities during half decade from 1958 to 2008.

Overall, it is evident that the working activity was the most popular activity in both time period, while travelling to work was the lowest during the same time period. In contrast, the proportion of working, travelling to work and relaxing at home showed an upward trend, the remaining categories followed a opposite trend.

In 1958, working consistently held the top position among all activities with 33%, followed by sleeping activity that accounted for 32%. The both categories approximately similar. Going out with friends and family was the third most popular activity in given time period, at 19%. Moreover, playing sport and travelling to work was recorded only 7% and 2% respectively.

In 2008, the proportion of working activity increased to 42%, a gain of just 10 percentage-points, followed by the same increase trajectory in relaxing at home, increased to 18%. This figure was more then doubled than 1958. In addition, the figure of sleeping was declining to 25%. The proportion of travelling to work rose to 7%, whereas going out with friends and family had declined to 6%, it was the highest decrease among all activities. Playing sports was the only one activity that recorded the similar proportion, at 7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall pattern: working takes the largest share in both years, while work, commuting and relaxing at home rise and sleeping and socialising fall. Several key figures are reported accurately, including work at 33% and 42%, sleep at 32% and 25%, and socialising at 19% and 6%. However, there are important inaccuracies: relaxing at home reaches 13% in 2008, not 18%, and playing sports is not shown in 1958, so it cannot be described as 7% then. Also, commuting is the smallest category only in 1958; in 2008 it is tied with sports at 7%, while socialising is lowest. Correcting these points and making the overview more precise would make the summary more complete and reliable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear four-part structure, moving from an introduction and overview to separate descriptions of each year. This gives the reader a coherent route through the information, and linking phrases such as “In contrast,” “Moreover” and “In addition” help connect details. The comparison is also generally easy to follow. To strengthen progression further, avoid connectors that imply a relationship not supported by the data: “the same increase trajectory” is awkward when introducing the home-relaxation figure, and “Moreover” does not clearly explain how the sports and commuting figures relate. Grouping the main increases together and the decreases together, with clearer references to each year, would make cohesion less mechanical and improve precision.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “accounted for,” “trajectory” and “percentage-points,” and the meaning is generally clear. Some less natural choices and collocations limit precision, however. “Working activity” and “sleeping activity” are repeated where “time spent working” and “time spent sleeping” would sound more natural. “The both categories” and “the same increase trajectory” are also awkward expressions, while “the highest decrease” would be better expressed as the largest fall. Take care with word forms and spelling, including “more then doubled” and singular “sport” when referring to the activity category. More accurate, natural collocations would help you describe the chart with greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including contrast clauses and comparisons, and most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors recur, though. For example, “during half decade” is missing an article, “in both time period” has a number-agreement problem, and “the remaining categories followed a opposite trend” contains an article error. The sentence “relaxing at home, increased to 18%” has an unnecessary comma and an incomplete connection between the subject and verb. There are also tense and clause-structure problems in “the figure of sleeping was declining” and “whereas … had declined to 6%, it was…”. Use consistent past-tense reporting and check articles, agreement and punctuation when joining comparisons.
