Student answer (Band 6.0)

The information about how the time of working adults is spent in a particular country in 1958 and 2008 is depicted by the given pie charts.

Overall, the prima facie glance makes it quite evident that adults spent vast majority of their time either spleeping or working in both the years whereas travelling to work contributed the least time spent activity in 1968 and going out with friends and families was the least time spent activity in 2008.

Scrutinizing deeper into the obtainable information, adults spent about 1/3rd of their day working in 1958 which increased by 9% and contributed 42% of the total time spent in working in 2008. The time spent by adults on travelling to work in 2008 is more than thrice the time spent by them on travelling in 1958. Percentage of time spent by them in playing sports showed a negligible rise of 1%( from 6% to 7%) over the time span of 50 years.

Concatenating further, the time spent in going out with family in 1958 was more than 3 times the time spent on it in 2008. The time spent on travelling to work and playing sports in 2008 was identical at 7%. Relaxing at home contributed 13% of total time in 2008 which was 5% more than the time spent on it in 1968. Time spent on going out with family/friends in 2008 was more than 3folds the time spent on travelling in 1958.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the broad pattern that work and sleep take substantial shares, and you make several relevant comparisons, including the rise in working time from 33% to 42% and the fall in socialising from 19% to 6%. However, the overview is weakened by calling sleep one of the largest activities without noting its decline from 32% to 25%, and by saying travel was the least activity in “1968” rather than 1958. The sports comparison is inaccurate: the chart shows sports only in 2008, at 7%, so the claimed rise from 6% is unsupported. The final comparison also reverses the relationship: 6% for socialising in 2008 is three times, not more than three times, the 1958 travel figure of 2%. Select and report the main changes more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. Comparisons are generally grouped by activity, and linking phrases such as “Overall” and “Scrutinizing deeper” signal movement through the report. However, progression is sometimes mechanical, particularly with “Concatenating further,” and the final sentence repeats a comparison already made while presenting it inaccurately. The overview also combines several points in a long sentence, making the key trends less clear. Organise the details around the most important increases and decreases, avoid repeating comparisons, and use simpler, more natural transitions. This would make the report’s progression easier to follow and its cohesion less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You show an adequate range and attempt less common expressions, including “contributed,” “negligible rise” and “over the time span.” Some choices are imprecise or unnatural for a data report: “prima facie glance” is redundant, “obtainable information” is awkward, and “time spent activity” is not a natural collocation. There are also spelling and word-form slips, notably “spleeping,” while “families” does not fit the intended reference to family and friends. These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Prefer straightforward chart language and use activity labels consistently; this will preserve your range while improving control of collocation and style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including relative clauses and comparisons, and most sentences communicate their intended meaning. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “spent vast majority” needs an article (“spent the vast majority”), and “in 1968” should be “in 1958.” The construction “increased by 9% and contributed 42% of the total time spent in working” is awkward and does not clearly connect the change to the share. In “more than 3folds,” the comparative form is not correctly constructed; use “more than three times.” Punctuation is also uneven, with extra spacing and a missing space after the opening parenthesis in “1%( from.” Check articles, comparison structures and sentence phrasing to make the complex forms more accurate.
