Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie charts compare the time provided to several tasks by working individuals in the year 1958 and 2008 in one particular nation. The scale is in percentage.

Overall, it can be seen that the highest amount of time was spent for working in both given years. The least time was provided for travelling in 1958 and for going out with friends and family in 2008.

To commence with, the time which was given to working was 33% in the year 1958 and it increased by 9% in the year 2008. Working adults spent 8% of their time for relaxing at home in 1958 and it increased in the year 2008 which was 13%. Moreover, time for travelling to working was 2% and 7% in the year 1958 and 2008, respectively.

However, the time provided for sleeping was reduced from 32% in 1958 to 25% in 2008. Adults gave less time for going out with their family and friends as compared to 1958 (19%) then 2008 (6%). Working individuals had spent almost equal time for sports which was 6% and 7% for the year 1958 and 2008, respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern that working took the largest share in both years, and correctly note the smallest categories in 1958 and 2008. Most figures are reported accurately, including the changes in work, travel, sleep and socialising. However, the overview is incomplete because it does not summarise the broader shifts: work and time at home increased, while sleep and going out declined. The sports comparison is also inaccurate: the chart lists sports only for 2008, at 7%; the 1958 figure of 6% belongs to going out with friends and family. This misreading affects the comparison, and the changes are sometimes listed without explaining their significance. A more complete overview and careful checking of category labels would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs presenting details. The information is generally grouped sensibly, with increases discussed before decreases, and phrases such as “Moreover” and “However” help signal relationships. Some linking is mechanical or not quite suited to the relationship being expressed; for example, “However” introduces a list of declines rather than a clear contrast with the preceding paragraph. The opening “To commence with, the” also has a punctuation-spacing error, and the final sentence introduces sports without a smooth transition. Improve progression by grouping all increases and decreases consistently, and use fewer, more precise connectors so the organisation feels less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic vocabulary to describe the charts, including “increased,” “reduced,” “travelling” and “relaxing at home.” However, several repeated or unnatural expressions limit precision. “Time provided to several tasks” and “time was provided for travelling” are not natural ways to describe how people allocate their day; “time spent on” is more appropriate. “Travelling to working” also misnames the chart category, which is “travelling to work.” The phrase “almost equal time for sports” is based on a misread category and uses an imprecise comparison. Aim for accurate chart labels and natural collocations, and vary “time” with expressions such as “share of the day” or “proportion.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including “which was 13%” and the comparison “reduced from 32% … to 25%.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical patterns are awkward or inaccurate. For example, “the highest amount of time was spent for working” uses an unsuitable preposition, while “Adults gave less time … as compared to 1958 then 2008” has an unclear comparison structure. The sentence beginning “Working adults spent 8% of their time … and it increased” also leaves the reference of “it” imprecise. There is a punctuation issue in “To commence with, the.” Practise clear comparative clauses and check prepositions, pronoun references and punctuation when editing.
