Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie charts illustrate the way working adults of a certain country spent their time in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, the charts show that the adults are more occupied with working and traveling to their jobs in 2008 more than they were in 1958. As decades passed their time for family and recreational activities also shortened.
Adults became more busy outside with the passing decades and preferred relaxing at home. In 1958, adults spent only 2% of their time on traveling to work whereas in 2008 they spend 7%. Alongside that, in 1958 the time they invested on working was only 33% which jumped to 42% in 2008. Furthermore, they used to spend only 8% of their time relaxing at home in 1958 which rose to 13% in 2008.
They reduced the time they spent going out with their family and sleeping quite significantly throughout the years. Previously, in 1958, they spent 19% of their time by stepping out with their friends or family which reduced dramatically to only 6% in 2008. Their time passed by sleeping was 32% in 1958 which also got reduced to 25% in 2008. However, the 7% time they spent playing sports stayed similar over the years as seen in 1958 and 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You provide a clear overview of the main shifts: working and commuting take a larger share in 2008, while sleeping and socialising decline. The figures you give for these activities are accurate, and you also report the rise in relaxing at home. However, the overview says recreational time shortened, which is too broad because relaxing at home increased; distinguish socialising from other leisure activities. The final claim that sports remained at 7% in both years is unsupported: the chart shows sports only in 2008, at 7%. Also, the opening paragraph about adults becoming busier outside and preferring to relax at home is unclear and does not add a precise comparison. A more selective, fully accurate overview would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to paragraphs comparing increases and decreases. Grouping commuting, work and home relaxation together, then socialising and sleep, helps the reader follow the data. However, some links between ideas are mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Alongside that,” “Furthermore,” and “However.” The sentence “Adults became more busy outside with the passing decades and preferred relaxing at home” also disrupts the progression because it is unclear and conflicts with the preceding overview. The sports comparison at the end is not smoothly integrated and repeats the idea of similarity without a 1958 figure. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each comparison directly to the relevant trend.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing changes, including “jumped,” “reduced dramatically,” and “significantly,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several imprecise or unnatural choices. “Adults became more busy outside” does not clearly describe the chart, while “time they invested on working” and “time passed by sleeping” are awkward collocations. “Stepping out with their friends or family” is less suitable for a formal data summary than a direct description of socialising. Some repetition of “time” and “spent” also limits flexibility. Aim for concise, conventional reporting language such as “the proportion of the day devoted to work” and “time spent socialising”; this will make comparisons more precise and appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “whereas” and “which,” and most sentences communicate the intended comparison. Some grammatical errors remain. In “in 2008 they spend 7%,” the past-time comparison calls for “spent”; similarly, “the 7% time” needs a more accurate grammatical construction, such as “the 7% of the day.” The sentence beginning “Adults became more busy…” is also awkwardly structured, making the relationship between being busy outside and relaxing at home unclear. Check tense consistency when describing both years and review article and noun-phrase construction. More consistently controlled verb forms and clearer sentence structures would improve accuracy without sacrificing variety.
