Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the two years and report several relevant figures, including working and sleeping in 1958 and the 2008 figures for work, sleep and relaxing. However, some data are inaccurate or unclear: playing sports is not shown for 1958, and the 1958 figures for relaxing at home and travelling to work are 8% and 2%, not approximately 7–8% for both. The overview also says adults spent time working and sleeping “respectively” across the years, which does not clearly summarise the main changes. A stronger response would highlight that work and commuting increased, while sleep and socialising fell, and accurately compare the categories across both charts. The response addresses the task, but its overview and selection of key features remain limited.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, with an opening, descriptions of the two years and a concluding overview. This gives the reader some organisation. However, progression between points is not always clear: “Secondly” does not introduce a clear second comparison, and “Lastly” groups three activities together without explaining their different changes. The overview repeats earlier information rather than drawing the main comparisons together. Linking words such as “Moreover,” “However” and “Meanwhile” are used, but sometimes mechanically or where the relationship between ideas is unclear. Organise the body into clear comparisons—for example, increases in work and travel, followed by decreases in sleep and socialising—and use references that make each year and activity easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing the charts, including “spent their time,” “working,” “sleeping” and “relaxing at home,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are unnatural or imprecise, such as “with the number of 19%,” “used their time in the sleeping activities” and “fall down.” Repeatedly calling adults “mature people,” “young adults” and “individuals” also creates inconsistency, especially when the chart refers to working adults. Choose direct, accurate terms and use common chart language such as “accounted for,” “rose,” “fell” and “share of the day.” These changes would make the comparisons clearer and more natural without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example with “Moreover” and “However,” but the response relies mainly on simple sentence patterns, and many sentences contain errors that make the meaning less clear. Examples include “The pie chart describes that how…” and “In the year of,1958 mostly adults spent…,” where sentence structure and punctuation are faulty. Verb forms and agreement are also inconsistent: “mature people spend” shifts tense, while “playing sports, travelling to work and going out … spent almost same time” does not form a clear grammatical comparison. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build sentences around clear subjects and verbs. For example: “In 1958, adults spent 33% of the day working and 32% sleeping.”
