Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart illustrates the percentages of the day spent by working adults on various activities in a particular country in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, working was the highest activities where poeple spent their most of the time in both the years, whereas travelling to work was least. However, sleeping time and going out with friends were the two sectors which has suddenly declined with the time period.
In 1958, people spent most of their time on working with one third of the proportion, which was increased to 42% in next 50 years. However, the second highest was sleeping in the year, 1958, but there was a sudden change seen and the number decreased to 25% in 2008 still kept it on second highest. Relaxing at home was accounted with 8% in 1958 and it increased to 13% in 2008.
Furthermore, playing sport and going out were at the same precentage in 2008 with 7% while it was different in 1958 with 9% and 2% respectively. Hanging out with friends or family had most hardship during the period from 19% to just 6%, a reduction of approximately 13% in the half century of year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall pattern: working takes the largest share in both years and rises, while sleeping and socialising decline. Most figures are reported accurately, including work (33% to 42%), sleep (32% to 25%), and relaxing at home (8% to 13%). However, the overview says travelling to work was the least activity, which is true only in 1958; in 2008 it is 7%, equal to playing sports, while going out is lower at 6%. There is also a factual error in saying sports and going out were both 7% in 2008, and the 1958 sports figure is not shown in the chart. The response covers the task and selects relevant comparisons, but these inaccuracies and the limited treatment of travel and sports keep the account from being consistently precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by details for 1958 and 2008, with a final paragraph on the remaining activities. This gives the reader a generally logical route through the information. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships, and comparisons are often placed together. At times, though, the progression is less controlled: the final paragraph repeats the decline in going out after it has already been discussed, and “Furthermore” introduces figures that do not clearly connect to the preceding comparison. Some references, such as “the number” and “it,” are also not fully clear. Grouping the figures by increases and decreases, and avoiding repeated points, would make the cohesion more flexible and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic vocabulary to describe the chart, including “proportion,” “declined,” “decreased,” and “reduction,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are, however, noticeable problems with word choice, collocation, word forms, and spelling. For example, “the highest activities” and “spent their most of the time” are unnatural, while “had most hardship” does not express the intended idea. “Precentage” is misspelled, and “playing sport” would be more naturally expressed as “playing sports.” Repetition of “sudden” and “increased” also limits precision. Aim for accurate, conventional chart language such as “accounted for,” “rose to,” and “fell to,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “whereas,” “which,” and “while,” and the main comparisons can usually be followed. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For instance, “working was the highest activities” has a singular–plural mismatch, and “the two sectors which has suddenly declined” uses an incorrect verb form. The phrase “in the year, 1958” is punctuated awkwardly, while “it increased to 13%” has an unclear reference. The final sentence, “a reduction of approximately 13% in the half century of year,” is also structurally awkward. Use clear subjects and verbs, check agreement, and make pronoun references explicit; these changes would improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at complex sentences.
