Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates how working adults spent their time in a particular country in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, most of the time was spent working in 2008 as well as in 1958. The amount of time working adults used to spend going out with family and friends faced the most decline in 2008 as compared to 1958.
In 1958, working adults spent 33% of their time working, followed by sleeping and going out with family and friends, which accounted for 32% and 19% of their time respectively. Time spent on relaxing at home and playing sports was significantly less than other activites(8% and 6%). The least amount of time was spent on travelling to work, which was only 2%.
In 2008, a significant amount of working adult's time was spent on working, standing at 42%. Sleeping stood at second place as 25% of the total time was spent sleeping. Which was followed by relaxing at home(with a figure of 13%). Almost same time was spent playing sports and travelling to work, which was 7%. Slightly less time was spent going out with family and friends, standing at only 6%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main pattern that working took the largest share in both years and correctly highlight the sharp fall in socialising, supported by accurate figures such as 33% to 42% for work and 19% to 6% for going out. The body also covers the main categories in each year. However, the overview could capture the broader changes more fully: sleeping declined, while commuting and relaxing at home increased, and sports appears only in the 2008 data. There is also a factual error in saying that adults spent 6% on sports in 1958; sports is not shown for that year. A clearer overview of the contrasting rises and falls, with careful treatment of the categories, would make the summary more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for 1958 and 2008. This makes the two years easy to follow, and sequencing within each paragraph is generally logical, moving from the largest shares to smaller ones. Some linking and sentence construction are less controlled, however. The fragment “Which was followed by relaxing at home” interrupts the flow, while “Almost same time was spent…” lacks a clear article and reads awkwardly. The repeated use of “spent” and “time” also makes the progression somewhat mechanical. Connect the comparisons more smoothly and use complete sentences and clearer referencing to strengthen cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “accounted for,” “stood at,” “followed by,” and “decline,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are some imprecise or unnatural choices, such as “faced the most decline,” “stood at second place,” and “Almost same time,” which limit the precision and naturalness of the description. “Significantly less” is also not the best fit for the relatively small difference between some categories. Spelling errors such as “activites” detract from accuracy. Aim for standard chart-description collocations and check spelling; this will help you express comparisons more precisely without relying on repeated phrases such as “time was spent.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the opening comparison and clauses with “which accounted for.” Most of the data remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are evident. “Which was followed by relaxing at home” is a sentence fragment, and “Almost same time was spent” is missing an article. In “working adult’s time,” the possessive form is not appropriate for the plural group, and the sentence beginning “In 1958” has a punctuation issue in “activities(8% and 6%).” There are also awkwardly joined phrases, such as “Sleeping stood at second place as 25%...” Work on complete sentence structure, articles, plural forms, and punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
