Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify several relevant features, including that work is the largest category in 2008, and you report figures such as 19% for socialising in 1958 and 42% for working in 2008. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: work was the largest category in 2008, but sleeping (32%) was almost equal to work (33%) in 1958. The comparison that socialising fell to 6% is correct, but the statement that it “discrease 13 percent” confuses the size of the change with the final figure. Important information is also omitted, especially the changes in sleeping and relaxing at home. To improve, give a clear overview of the main shifts, then compare the key categories accurately and consistently.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is an attempt to organise the response chronologically, beginning with 1958 and then moving to 2008, and phrases such as “To begin” and “Furthermore” signal progression. However, the ideas are not arranged coherently enough: the opening overview is difficult to interpret, and the long middle section combines several figures without clear sentence boundaries or relationships. For example, the discussion moves from socialising to travel, sleeping and work in a single run-on passage. Some linking words are used mechanically rather than to clarify comparisons. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the detailed comparisons, and group related changes together—for example, increases in work and commuting versus decreases in sleep and socialising.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “pie charts,” “percent,” “highest,” and “travelling to work,” so the reader can recognise the topic and several categories. However, the range is basic and repetitive, and frequent spelling and word-choice problems make parts difficult to understand. Examples include “activies,” “familiy,” “slepping,” and “discrease.” Phrases such as “the activity more adults like it” and “the last one is going out with friends” are not natural ways to describe chart data. Build a small set of accurate reporting expressions, such as “accounted for,” “rose to,” “fell to,” and “the largest share,” and check spelling and collocations before finishing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt a few different sentence patterns, including the comparison structure “while this figure was the lowest,” but control is limited and errors occur frequently. The opening, “The pie charts give show,” contains an incorrect verb construction, while “how working adults spent their in 1958 and 2008” is missing a noun. Other problems include incomplete clauses such as “In 1958, travelling to work just 2 percent” and unclear agreement or sentence structure in “working just 1 persent increase.” Punctuation and spacing also make the long middle section hard to follow. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use simple past-tense reporting forms consistently before attempting longer comparisons.
