Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses the task with a clear overview and selects the main changes: working, relaxing at home and commuting increased, while sleeping and socialising declined, and sport appeared in 2008. The figures reported are accurate, including the rise in working from 33% to 42% and the fall in going out from 19% to 6%. The comparison of the two years is supported with relevant details, and the overview identifies the largest activities. To make the account more fully developed, clarify that working became the largest category in 2008 while sleeping was slightly larger than working in 1958. Also avoid broad wording such as “significant rise” for both smaller increases without highlighting their different scale.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The four-paragraph structure is effective: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the two years make the information easy to follow. The progression from the general pattern to specific figures is clear, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “In addition” help signal relationships. This already provides a coherent account, but cohesion is not always fully controlled. The overview’s list of increases and decreases is somewhat compressed, and “while sleeping and going out family declined” is not smoothly connected or clearly phrased. The final paragraph also groups several changes together without a strong comparison between them. Use more precise referencing and vary the way comparisons are linked to make the progression more fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses enough topic vocabulary to report the chart, including “accounted for,” “represented,” “dominant activity,” and “declined.” However, word choice and collocation are noticeably inaccurate in places, which limits precision. “Travelling at work” does not express commuting, “proporting time” is an incorrect form, and “playing with sports” is not a natural phrase. “Going out family” is also incomplete, while “significant” is used for increases that are not equally substantial. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and avoid forcing more formal vocabulary where a simpler expression is clearer. A more controlled range of chart language would make the comparisons sound more precise and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes a mix of simple and more complex sentences, such as the contrast beginning “In contrast, sleeping fell to 25%, while…” and the participial phrase “making it the dominant activity.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening should be “The pie charts compare,” because the plural subject requires a plural verb. There is also a duplicated “of” in “share of of the day,” and “in the year 1958 and 2008” is an awkward construction. In “adults spent 33% of their time in working,” the preposition pattern is incorrect. Review subject–verb agreement, articles and prepositions, and proofread for duplicated words and spacing around punctuation to improve accuracy.
