Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided pie charts illustrates data about the amount of time spent by employed adults on various activities of a specific country in 1958 and 2008.

Overall, in both years most of the time was spent on working and sleeping relatively. Travelling to work, relaxing at home and working had major upgrade in percentage. All the other activities had a significant drop exept playing sports which had the smallest increase. The most noticable drop was in going out with kith and kins.

In 1958, working adults spent the most time in working which was 33% compared to 42% in 2008. A major increase can be seen in relaxing at home which was 8% in 1958 and 13% in 2008. Travelling to work went from just 2% to 7% in 2008. Playing sports just went from 6% to 7%.

The most significant decrease happened in acticity of going out with friends or family with 19% in 1958 to just 6% in 2008. Working adults spent the second most time in sleeping and it also reduced from 32% to 25%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main changes and include accurate figures for working, sleeping, relaxing at home, commuting and going out. The overview identifies the rise in work and the fall in socialising, and the body supports these points with comparisons such as 33% to 42% and 19% to 6%. This gives the response a clear account of the chart’s central patterns. However, the overview is not fully precise: “All the other activities had a significant drop” conflicts with the increases in relaxing and commuting, and sports rose only in 2008, so it cannot be compared as a change from 1958. The claim that working and sleeping took “most” time is also less exact than noting their combined prominence. Clarifying these points would make the overview more consistently accurate and complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting the figures. Information generally progresses from the broad pattern to specific comparisons, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In 1958,” and “The most significant decrease” help guide the reader. The final paragraph also groups the two declining activities together effectively. Some cohesion is less controlled, however. The overview’s sequence of “Travelling to work, relaxing at home and working” does not clearly distinguish increases from decreases, and “All the other activities” has an unclear reference. The sports comparison is also placed among the 1958 figures even though the chart gives no 1958 sports value. Grouping activities by rising and falling shares, and using more precise references, would strengthen the progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing charts, including “percentage,” “increase,” “reduced,” and “significant decrease,” so the main comparisons are understandable. There is some attempt at less common phrasing, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task: “major upgrade” is not an appropriate collocation for a percentage change, and “kith and kins” is an unsuitable substitute for the chart’s “friends or family.” Spelling errors such as “exept,” “noticable,” and “acticity” also reduce accuracy. “Spent the most time in working” is another awkward expression. Aim for precise, conventional chart language and check spelling; this would make your descriptions clearer and more natural without requiring a more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mixture of simple statements and more developed comparisons, including “which was 33% compared to 42% in 2008” and “with 19% in 1958 to just 6% in 2008.” Most sentences communicate the intended figures, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical control is inconsistent: “The provided pie charts illustrates” has a plural subject with a singular verb, while “spent the most time in working” uses an incorrect preposition and construction. The overview sentence “Travelling to work, relaxing at home and working had major upgrade” also lacks a natural grammatical pattern for describing several changes. Use structures such as “the proportion spent on X rose from … to …” and check subject–verb agreement and sentence construction. More consistently accurate complex comparisons would improve the range and control.
