Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie charts illustrates the percentage of different daily activities done throughout the day by employed people in 1958 and 2008. Overall, the proportion of working and travelling to work has increased between these years while, on the contrary going out with family/friends and sleeping has decreased significantly.
The figures clearly states that the time taken for travelling to work has increased substantially from only 2% in 1958 to 7% in 2008. Working durations has also risen from 33% to over 42% , respectively. The duration for relaxation at home has also seen an increase of 5 % from 8% in 1958.
On the other hand, the figures for sleeping and going out with friends has decreased from 32% and 19% in 1958 to 25% and 6% in 2008 , respectively. The number for playing sports has remained unchanged over the years with 7% of the daily time consumed in their routine.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main overall shifts accurately: working and commuting take a larger share in 2008, while sleeping and socialising take less. The comparisons for travel (2% to 7%), sleep (32% to 25%) and going out (19% to 6%) are correctly reported, and you also include the rise in time spent relaxing at home. However, the account is not fully precise: working rises from 33% to 42%, not “over 42%,” and the claim that sports “has remained unchanged” is unsupported because the chart gives a 7% figure only for 2008. The overview could also better highlight that working is the largest category in both years and that socialising shows a particularly marked decline. More exact reporting and a clearer selection of key features would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised clearly into an introduction and overview followed by comparisons of increases and decreases. The contrastive phrase “On the other hand” helps signal the shift to declining activities, and “respectively” efficiently links the paired figures for sleeping and going out. The progression is easy to follow, with related information grouped together. Some connections are less smooth, however: the second paragraph moves from commuting to working and then relaxation without explicitly framing these as the categories that increased. The final sentence about sports also feels detached from the preceding comparison and would be clearer if introduced as a separate point about the category shown only in 2008. More deliberate linking and grouping would make the progression more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “increased substantially,” “decreased significantly,” and “duration,” so the main comparisons are understandable. There are also attempts to vary wording rather than repeat “time.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing chart data. “Working durations” and “the time taken for travelling to work” are less direct than “time spent working” and “commuting.” “The number for playing sports” is not an appropriate collocation for a percentage, and “daily time consumed in their routine” is awkward. Aim for precise, natural phrases such as “the share of the day spent on…” and “accounted for.” This would improve flexibility and accuracy while retaining the clear meaning of your current vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the overview contrast “while, on the contrary…” and the paired comparison ending in “respectively.” Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening should be “The pie charts illustrate,” because the plural subject requires a plural verb. Similarly, “The figures clearly state” and “Working durations have” require plural agreement, while “going out with friends has decreased” needs a plural subject or a rephrasing such as “the proportion of people going out has decreased.” There are also punctuation and spacing slips around commas and percentages. Check subject–verb agreement and sentence punctuation carefully, and use a wider range of accurately controlled comparison structures.
