Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie charts illustrate how employees spent their time on various activities in a particular country in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, it is evident that the proportion for activities such as working, relaxing at home and travelling to work increased substantially in the final year. In contrast, the percentage of individuals who spent their time while sleeping and going out with friends and family decreased significantly, whereas, the figure for playing sports remained unchanged.
Looking at the details, working class individuals recorded the highest proportion in both years, which rose dramatically from 33% to 42%, making it the most dominant catagory. On the other hand, relaxing at home and sleeping catagories also rose from 8% and 32% to 13%, in 2008, making them the second catagory. Furthermore, the figure for travelling to work climbed from 2% to 7% in 2008. However, the figure of going out individuals dropped considerably from 19% to 6%. In addition, the number of employees who spent their time in playing sports remained constant at 7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main shifts and support them with relevant figures: working rises from 33% to 42%, while sleeping falls from 32% to 25% and going out drops from 19% to 6%. The overview also notes increases in relaxing and commuting. However, it contains a factual error: playing sports is shown only in 2008, at 7%, so it cannot be said to have “remained unchanged.” The comparison of sleeping and relaxing is also unclear: relaxing rises, but sleeping falls, and the claim that both categories rose is inaccurate. The response covers the chart, but some key details are less fully and accurately reported. Make the overview precise and distinguish categories that move in opposite directions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview and a paragraph of supporting details. Its progression from the broad trends to individual figures is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “On the other hand” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in connecting ideas. However, the sequence of comparisons becomes less clear in “relaxing at home and sleeping categories also rose,” because the two trends differ, and “making them the second category” has an unclear reference. The repeated use of “the figure” and several contrast markers also makes cohesion somewhat mechanical. Group the increases and decreases separately, and use precise references to each activity.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “dominant,” “climbed,” “dropped considerably” and “substantially.” These choices communicate the main comparisons and show some awareness of more formal report style. There are, however, occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. “Working class individuals” does not mean people who are working; use “working adults” or simply “the proportion spent working.” “The figure of going out individuals” is also unnatural, and “the number of employees” is less appropriate when describing a percentage of time. The spelling of “category” is incorrect twice as “catagory.” Aim for precise activity labels and natural collocations, and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview sentence with “whereas” and comparisons such as “which rose dramatically from 33% to 42%.” Most sentences are understandable, and punctuation generally supports the meaning; this reflects good control alongside some remaining errors. In “relaxing at home and sleeping catagories also rose from 8% and 32% to 13%,” the plural subject and paired figures create a confusing grammatical structure, as well as an inaccurate comparison. The phrase “spent their time in playing sports” uses an incorrect preposition pattern; write “spent their time playing sports.” The clause “making them the second catagory” also has an unclear pronoun reference. Keep parallel comparisons grammatically balanced and ensure each pronoun clearly refers to one activity.
