Student answer (Band 7.0)

The charts illustrate the percentage of time being consumed in daily activties by working adults in a particular country between the year 1958 and 2008.

Overall, people spent most of their time working and sleeping but in 2008, the work and sleep ratio lost its balance. Also, the time being spent on going out with friends and family decreased noticeably than 1958.

In 1958, an average person would spend almost similar amount of time working and sleeping in their daily life, with 33% on working and 32% on sleeping. Travelling to work would consume only 2% of their daily activity, leaving more time to go out with friends and family with 19%. The rest of the day would be spent by relaxing at home with 8%, and playing sport with 6% of their whole day.

In 2008, a working adult would spend more time working than sleeping with 42% of the day being spent on work, and 25% on sleep. Travelling to go for work increased to 7%, sharing the exact amount of time spent on playing sports. However, the trend of going out with friends and family dropped sharply to 6% while relaxing at home increased to 13%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main shifts accurately: working rises from 33% to 42%, sleeping falls from 32% to 25%, and socialising drops from 19% to 6%, while travel and time relaxing at home increase. The overview also highlights the changing balance between work and sleep, giving the response a clear summary of the most important features. However, the account is not fully precise: you say that people spent “most” of their time working and sleeping, which could suggest these activities dominated the whole day, and you introduce sports as a 1958 activity even though the chart lists it only for 2008. The comparison of the two years is otherwise relevant and supported with figures. Check category labels carefully and avoid adding unsupported details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing 1958 and 2008. This makes the year-by-year comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Also,” and “However” help signal the relationships between points. The figures are generally grouped sensibly, with the main changes presented in the final paragraph. Some phrasing is less smooth, particularly “the work and sleep ratio lost its balance,” which makes the overview’s meaning less direct, and repeated use of “would spend” gives the descriptions a slightly formulaic feel. Use more precise comparisons between years and vary how you connect related figures to make progression feel more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of task vocabulary, including “percentage,” “decreased noticeably,” “increased,” and “dropped sharply,” and these choices communicate the main trends clearly. There is also some flexibility in describing time allocation, rather than relying only on “went up” and “went down.” However, several collocations are awkward or imprecise: “time being consumed” is unnatural for describing a chart, “work and sleep ratio” is not the clearest way to express the comparison, and “travelling to go for work” is unnecessarily wordy. “Activties” is also misspelled, and “playing sport” is less natural here than “playing sports.” More accurate collocations and careful proofreading would strengthen the range and control already shown.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the contrast in “while relaxing at home increased to 13%” and the clause beginning “with 33% on working and 32% on sleeping.” Most sentences are understandable, and the past-time comparisons are generally handled consistently. A few grammatical choices remain awkward: “the percentage of time being consumed” uses an unsuitable passive construction, while “almost similar amount” needs an article and a more natural comparative form. In “leaving more time to go out,” the relationship between the figures is also not expressed precisely. Aim for direct constructions such as “adults spent” and check articles and comparative forms; this will improve accuracy without sacrificing sentence variety.
