Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the two years and attempts an overview, noting that work increased and time spent going out with friends decreased. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: “more out going people” does not match the data, since going out with friends or family fell from 19% to 6%. The report gives only a few 1958 figures and then ends mid-sentence (“Only 2% of th…”), with no meaningful comparison of the 2008 chart or coverage of the other activities. It also falls 63 words short of the required minimum. To address the task more fully, complete the report and select the main changes, including the rise in working and travel, and the falls in sleeping and socialising.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response into an introduction, an overview and a detail paragraph, which gives the reader some sense of the intended structure. However, the progression is not sustained because the final paragraph stops abruptly, and the comparison between years is not developed. Linking is limited: “therefore” is used to connect ideas, but the relationship is not expressed clearly, while “as well as” does not make the comparison easier to follow. The overview also repeats the idea of adults being busy without clearly separating the main trends. Use complete paragraphs with one clear purpose each, and connect the figures through direct comparisons such as “by contrast” or “while.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant vocabulary for describing charts, including “illustrate,” “highest proportion,” and “contribute,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited, and several word choices or spellings reduce clarity: “more busy,” “more out going people,” “freinds,” “propotion,” and “sleepiing.” “Spend their 33% of the day in work” is also an awkward expression. Build a small set of accurate chart-reporting phrases, such as “accounted for,” “rose to,” “fell to,” and “the largest share.” Check spelling carefully and choose precise terms for the activity shown rather than describing people as “outgoing.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a sentence joined with “therefore” and a participial phrase beginning “followed by.” However, control is inconsistent. In “The 2008 adults are more busy in work then 1958 adults,” the comparison structure and tense are faulty; “there time with family kept decrease” also has errors in possessive form and verb construction. The sentence beginning “In 1958” contains an awkward clause structure, and the final sentence is incomplete. Capitalisation after “Overall,” and punctuation around spaces and sentence boundaries also need attention. Practise complete, accurate comparison sentences in the past tense, and proofread each sentence for agreement, articles and punctuation.
