Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given pie charts show comparison in between the years 1958 and 2008, over a period of 40 years, which is about how job holders spent their time doing 6 different activities, measuring the units in percentage.

Overall, it can be seen that, throughout the period, the people who work spent their largest propotion of time on either sleeping or working. In addition, while going out with friends/family was more popular back in 1958, in year 2008, people's tendency to relax at home was visible.

In 1958, both working and sleeping was dominating individual's daily routine as people spent 33% and 32% time on these two activities respectively which remained more or less similar in the year 2008 as well. Simillarly, travelling to work and playing sports were the lowest time allocating activities both in 1958 and 2008 though the ratio of travelling to work increased over the time by almost 5% and eventually became 7% in the end . However, a moderate number of time was also spent on going out with friends and family back then which was 19% but over time it reduced significantly and reached to only 6% by 2008. Meanwhile, people prefered to spent their time on relaxation at home comparatively in same way in both timeline.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main contrast between the charts: work and sleep take the largest shares, while socialising declines and relaxing at home becomes more prominent. Several figures are reported accurately, including work at 33% in 1958 and travel rising to 7% in 2008. However, some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate. Work and sleep did not remain similar across the years: work rose to 42%, while sleep fell to 25%. Also, sports is shown only in 2008, at 7%, so it cannot be described as one of the lowest activities in both years. The change in relaxation is also left vague, despite its rise from 8% to 13%. A more precise overview and fuller reporting of these key changes would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the two years, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In addition,” and “Meanwhile” help guide the reader. This meets the expected level of coherent organisation. However, the final paragraph combines several comparisons in a way that makes the progression less clear: the sentence about travel and sports is followed by socialising and then relaxation, without a consistent grouping of increases and decreases. Some linking is also mechanical, and “in the year 2008” and “back then” do not always make the time reference precise. Grouping the main rises together and the falls together, with clearer references to each year, would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing charts, including “largest proportion,” “reduced significantly,” and “increased over the time.” These choices communicate the main trends, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions that limit precision, such as “comparison in between,” “job holders,” “time allocating activities,” and “people's tendency to relax at home was visible.” Spelling errors in “propotion,” “Simillarly,” and “prefered” also show inconsistent control. Aim for standard chart language and natural collocations, for example, “the proportion of time spent working” and “the share allocated to relaxing at home.” This would make the description more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast clause beginning “while” and a relative clause in “which was 19%.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “both working and sleeping was dominating” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “people prefered to spent” uses an incorrect verb form. The opening phrase “show comparison in between” also has an awkward grammatical construction, while “spent 33% and 32% time” needs a more accurate noun phrase. Punctuation is occasionally loose, particularly the extra space before the full stop after “in the end.” Check agreement, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries carefully while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
